Re: Vortec Head setup

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. If I'm not pushing higher boost, infact want to lower the boost, why get the ARP bolts when the stock bolts are good enough. Also agree on the stock head gaskets.

I'll give Harry a few days to get back to be and then I'll contact him again.

Keep it coming guys

To get the same power as you has w/the stock heads, with the Vortecs, you are going to have to lower your boost levels, boost will automatically lower w/better flowing heads & larger camshaft.

Good luck on your build.

I don't think you will hit 11's by lowering boost just because you installed Vortecs. In fact, I think the opposite is true, I see you having to keep it about the same to accomplish your goal of 11.80, think that's what you said. For 11's, every little bit is going to help. We all know 12's are fairly easily attainable but 11's are a bit of a different story. Good luck!

If you are using stock steel rockers, you will run in to a problem (rocker hitting the stud, because of higher lift). You need to get "long slot rockers"or rollers.

Interesting, didn't know that.

I'm going to try and call Harry tomorrow for some more information and what he recommends.

Thanks guys!

I would use ARP head bolts, they are re-useable; the stock head bolts are one time use, so you have to buy new ones anyways.

I am using stock replacement comp cams 850 lifters, I have an aggressive ramp cam with a peak .535 of lift.

i run stock stamp steel rockers on a cam similar to the 422. factory lifters, harden push rods.

Well according to Harry, he suggests the Comp Cams Pro Magnum lifters and for Springs, I need a spring with 180psi of seat pressure. Still confused on that as most LS1 beehive springs are a bit lower than that.

Re: Vortec Head setup

Any suggestions on Valve Springs for a big cam? Harry keeps pushing the fact that I need close to 180psi of closed seat pressure. But most springs I see, even for high lift LS1 engines are like 140psi.

Maybe a spring that won't need the spring seat to be cut for a larger diameter? Bolt on?

Also, a good set of Rockers to go along with the springs?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Seat pressure hold the valves closed under boost. If your going to use a harry cam than you will have tons of cylinder pressure. Heavy springs will prevent valve float. I run 350 pound on my bowtie jessel combo. 200 pounds on my vortec motor. I used dual pac springs. Use full roller rockers to support the tension of the heavy springs. if you don't the rockers will turn blue from the heat from friction.. Ask me how I know this!! Been there done it.

I know ralph pretty well. I think his biggest trick was he listening to Harry. Harry is a great tuner and knows his way around these trucks.

Thanks Frank. Harry and I were talking about you and Ralph. Do you have a specific spring I can use? Part #? Do the heads need to be cut for the spring?

Still need help on what Valve Springs I should get. One of the last things of the puzzle before I start ordering parts.

Thanks,

Re: Vortec Head setup

BUMP on this.

Do I need to run Aftermarket (Long Slot or Roller Tip or Full Roller) Rocker arms for higher lift cam? Can I use stock vortec arms? The Lift will be .525 with 1.5 ratio.

I've done the research and I'm sure I'm not the first one to do Heads/cam swap. Just not many posts talk about using stock rockers with aftermarket cams. I've found most of the Parts I need, waiting on Hood to reply to see if he can get them all. Last thing is rockers.

Thank you,
