Am i really supposed to remove all of that material? I am using 1203 gaskets. Newbie at this. It just seems like an awful lot of metal to remove.

I did on mine, alot of grinding. Make sure you are careful tho when removing material in the area between the 2 closest inlets. Its already tight in there.

In either event, I wouildnt get too worked up over the water port ones, maybe just round those off a wee bit. But there are advantages to removing that material on the rest of the ports.

Wow ok. I guess i'll get my burr going. Is this usually how much comes out of a head when you port match? I don't see why gm just doesn't cast it better.

Well the did their homework on the combustion chamber and flow #'s I guess where its really important. With that said, I'll take a lil pocket porting (home porting) anyday for the benefits these heads reap in the end.

GM did their homework and small ports work well for low end torque of the production 4.3L NA motor.

but larger ports work well on turbo motors. so it does what they wanted it to do.

now you are asking it to do something else..

I just went and looked at the heads with gaskets off. According to the lines i drew it looks pretty close to the edge. Have you guys gone through the walls while porting? Should i not go all the way to the line?

yeah what he said...... dont port it all the way to the edge of the gasket.

you only want to open it up to match the port on the intake. (not the gasket) think about it for a minute..... it will make sense.

man all these comments. You guy keep making me walk back and forth into the garage lol! :) Ok this what i found. I took the gasket off of the heads and placed it onto the intake. It looks like there is enough material on the intake to match it to the gasket as well, thus matching the ports perfectly to the heads.

you can do exactly that. but be very careful when matching the heads. and the intake must be fully welded. if you port too much you will break through.

the intake can be welded but the heads will be junk.

1" is what your looking for.
