Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

Does anyone sell a Walbro 450 pump kit for our SyTy's? Or can someone tell me the correct part #? I bought a 255 but want to step up to the 450.

The search option isn't working on my iPad, sorry if this has recently been asked.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

I just used a 450 pump off Ebay from a Authorized Walbro dealer. Get the Pump with the install kit. They aren't SYTY specific.

Those pumps also draw more current than our trucks electrical components are designed to handle.

You can buy all the parts needed at racetronix to upgrade for the current draw of these pumps. I have all the components. But have been taking care of more important projects on the truck and haven't had a chance to install the parts yet.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

Thank you. I bought the wiring kit along with the 255 pump from them. My goals have changed and I might as well step up to a larger pump to start. I didn't see the 450 pump on their site.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

It takes another wire harness for the pumps that draw more current. At least that is what I was told by Racetrinix. I don't know if they stock the harness or made one up for me. And also a few parts at the fuel tank need to be changed out. I sent a message telling them what I intended to install and what needed to be upgraded to handle the pump. And they sent me a list of what I needed.

The pumps will run on the stock stuff at the tank and probably the hot wire kit. But it is pushing the components at your tank past the limit they were intended for. The 450 is just barley over. So it may not cause trouble. Or it may take a long time to cause issues. But it is a gamble when you are maxing anything out.

I have a Ty hot wire harness on my truck that has very few miles on it that I get to remove.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

I'm in the middle of installing a Walbro 450 now, and was planning to post a how-to when I'm done. It will probably be a couple of weeks though. One problem is that the bulkhead connector pins aren't rated for the current draw of the bigger pump. Racetronix sells a new bulkhead connector and harness, but they also recommend wiring the pump differently to share the load over two of the pins in the connector. You could wire the pump the same as stock, but it will likely cause problems with overheating the connector later on.

Do the stock sized fuel lines even come close to flowing that much fuel? That's a huge jump over stock.

I run Larger Fuel lines with my 450 pump. I have the Hotwire kit currently installed and had no issues last season. However, I did purchase the Bulkhead harness from Sportmachines as another member melted the Fuel pump connector and will be installing that this winter.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

I have used many of the 450 pumps since they first came out. Not on the Sy or Ty though. Just 255s and a twin 340 on one of my trucks. Talked to walbro in person also at a trade show. Engineers were interested in my experience with them on e85 over time. I would say out of 15 I put in 7 would failed over time. Just my experience. We don't install them to use on just gas. Obviously. Racetronix makes some great harness upgrades for the fuel system on these trucks. I bought three of them. If I need quite a bit more fuel will do another twin pump setup over using a 450. Not my favorite thing to pull these tanks out very often.

Syclone3,

Do you recommended any other wiring upgrades for the 450 pump? Like I said I'm guna upgrade to the Racetronix bulkhead harness and don't want any melted connectors.

Thanks

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

Definitely get the racetronix wiring kit if they have it for the 450. Stock wiring cant handle the amperage draw.

I will price everything out and see what the difference is. I don't plan on frequently dropping the tank.

Is SyTy performance the only option for twin pump components?

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

The 450 I put in my Subaru is physically bigger than the 255's. I would make sure that it will fit in a twin setup if that is what you are planning to do. I don't like the idea of relying on two pumps to do the job, since one could fail and the truck will still run. You just won't have enough fuel when you need it most. Not many people monitor fuel pressure, and even less monitor flow rate.

Re: Walbro 450 Fuel Pump

I am so far behind on my installing of a fuel pump. I had bought a Aeromotive 340 to install. I don't think the Walbro 450 was out yet. May have been and I had not heard of it yet.

Don't buy 2 Ty's and a Sy. And get your son a BMW. You will never get any projects done.
