What makes a SyTy a SyTy?

Seriously... I know some of you don't consider it a Sy Ty if the AWD is removed, and it certainly has to have turbo power. For some people it has to have all the stock components (i.e 4L60/700R4, 4.3L V6 etc). Others still would say it's a Ty if it came from the factory as a Ty, regardless of what'd been done to it.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a Ty if it came from the factory that way, regardless of what changes have been made. But I do think that it has to have turbo power and full time AWD for the SPIRIT of the vehicle to be maintained.

I toy with the idea of having a turbocharged 400 sbc with AWD in my Ty someday, even though I'm most likely never going to do it. Why? Because I've got the 400 sbc block sitting in the garage not doing much of anything at the moment.

Before any purists start smacking me around, I did say that I'd most likely never do it, or at least build a clone to do it to instead. :wink:

Heh. No, I didn't blow up my 4.3, and I'm not selling the 400 anytime soon. I bought it for a car I've since sold, but I'm going to use it in something. Just don't know what yet.

In all seriousness, conceptually it seems to me to be the trifecta of turbo, AWD, and minitruck that makes it a Syty. But it may be something different to each person....

What makes them is a good question.... each person is going to see it different , but to me its

1) AWD

2) V-6

3) Turbocharged

4) Cladding

Without this stuff it may be neat - but its not really a Typhoon or Syclone in my eyes.

I am doing an engine build and may be going with a new "sportsman series bowtie block that GM is releasing. Cheaper than the standard bowtie, a little lighter, but the better oiling, cooling and four bolt bottom like the standard bowtie.

Is there a mindset that using a bowtie block causes some doubt that this would not be a true syty.

Are we saying that a garret turbo, a/a systems, vortec heads, disc brake systems and other mods constitute a "no longer true syty" theory.

Does the bowie block really make it different? What about a billet crank? Are we not really improving on something that GM should have dealt with a long time ago? Like at the design table...

I believe that as long as it has the VIN it is a SyTy. However there is a difference between an 'original' SyTy and various stages of 'modified' SyTy. The real question is which one is more desirable. And the answer depends on individual tastes for individual resonings. My Ty is the original AWD Turbo 4.3 with the original paint, but still has a few boltons so its not completely 'original' and I wouldn't want it any other way.

My God. I cant believe we argue about these things. Damn. If the damn thing rolled out of the factory as a Ty or Sy thats what it is. Everyone modifys and personalizes their vehicles for their own reasons. I think as long as it looks like a Sy/Ty and has the VIN to match then its all good. I do think the AWD makes it unique but even without it's still the same vehicle....just someone other that GM's interpretation. I like em both ways; stock and modified. As a buyer we all look for the stockers so we can either have a new canvas for our own interpretations or for the selling value of having an all original vehicle. As long as other people think it's just a little pickup with ground effects then I'm happy with that. Makes for a good laugh at the next light :grin:
