I know BG and alot of others sware by it. also, those of you who use it, where do you mount the sensor? what do they cost? is it a good way of determining false knock? does autometer make one?

TIA

I don't swear by much. I do swear AT a lot..

Knock gauge - another tool, you have to see how much you can trust it. I didn't get my Casper's gauge going. Do a search on this site to see my experiences with it. As of now, there are no plug n play knock gauges for Syty's. There is an easy schematic to setup an LED that will flash indicating when knock retard is occurring. I believe Barry Tisdale developed that. Opie's been using it, and from what we saw, it was as accurate as the stock ESC/knock retard system is. Meaning, the LED would flicker when we saw knock retard. If the system is accurate is a completely different story.

I would like to see a gauge available for people, as it would give some sort of indication that knock is occurring. I don't want to see people RELYING on it however.

Maybe we should put up a page for people to make their own. It would be nice if someone would sell one. I'm sure we could convince Spina at Casper's electronics to make one for syty's.

wasn't there a knock detector on scanmaster? but someone was trying to get a GP for one, however i suppose it never fell through. it was a little black box, that detects knock and other things. i believe they have it for GN's. i tried to get on that GP, but guess it didn't get anywhere

Brian,

I am going to do a search for it here but I was wondering if you had a diagram for it. if not no big deal. anybody else out there have a wiring diagram?

Just a question, does the knock guage msd makes work for our trucks. I remember seeing it in Jegs and it was like $150 and it was a simple set of led lights (like 5 or so). Just wondering if anyone has tried it out, I was thinking about buying it but if it don't work I won't bother. Thanks hopefully someone will come out with something.

Even if the MSD can be adapted to our sytys, I'd save my money. The setup BG is referring to costs under a dollar in parts.

 I was here before BG started swearing in his posts...long time ago!

LED would flicker when we saw knock retard.

How difficult do think it would be to set a threshold? Say, unlit until 5* of retard?

I don't want to see people RELYING on it however.

Yeah, I agree...but hard not to rely on anything useful.

I hooked up the Casper Knock gage to my Sy. It is connected to my existing Knock sensor. At first it didn't work and my check engine light came on. I called Casper and they told me to try putting a 10K amp resistor (I don"t recall if that is the size for sure, Casper can tell you)in line.Radeo Schack has them for $.79 for a packet of 5. After installing the resistor, my check engine has not come on anymore and when I start my engine 1 or 2 lights will come on and then go off. The main light that shows it is under power stays on. Under WOT I've never shown any knock on the gage and I don't have access to a scantool to verify this.
Has anyone else tried this?

No, I haven't tried that, cuz it ain't gonna work well. You are completely bypassing the ESC (filtering).

The knock sensor is a microphone and picks up LOTS of noise. You need to filter it, and then determine what is good noise or bad noise. Arbitrarily putting a 10k resistor ain't gonna work. The ESC filter was calibrated for these trucks with lots of R&D behind it. Is it foolproof ? HECK no, but it's the best we got.
