worth losing the cat

Thinking about geting a cat delete for when I race the truck. Is it worth it? What HP increase would I see. How much louder will the exhaust sound. I have a 3" catback with no muffler. I have a greedy boost control so over boost should not be a problem.

Re: worth losing the cat

Just an estimate based on my results, stock cat drops 5 hp, 3in cat drops 1-2 hp, as compared to no cat. The only other thing I notice is the wastegate has to open more with 3 in and more again with no cat to hold the same pressure. Make sure your wastegate is large enough. Noise does increase a little.

I dont think you will notice a big difference. The noise isnt all that bad and I think it sounds pretty good, Ive been running no cat no muffler for over a year and love it, it sounds prettty sinister IMO.

The turbo really eats up a lot of the noise compared to a NA setup. There will be no "sleeper" effect though if you run the pipe on the street:tup:

Re: worth losing the cat

I have been wondering the same thing i was think of (as soon as i can find a 3" DP) of running a 3" cat and exhast no muffler depening on the sound i dont want it to sound anything like a damn import with a shit can on it haha

and i only want to run the cat for the boost spike but am also mostly stock

Re: worth losing the cat

Thanks guys. I am using the rpm stage 2. It has a larger wastegate. I dont mind the louder sound. I had a 450hp bel air with 40 series flows. Now that was loud. The pipe is cheap but to climb under there and remove the cat for 5hp?? I might do it just for the sound.

Re: worth losing the cat

I found with my cat on that it seriously choked my turbo from spooling up, BUT my turbo is rather large, t72, and when the cat was removed it spooled night and day difference. I'm thinkging the stage two should still be ok with a cat, especially a 3". But I thought I read that it was a 20hp difference when removing the cat from a stock sy/ty. Maybe I read wrong.

Re: worth losing the cat

The stage 1 spooled up great with the cat and a 2500 stall. I now have a 2800. I have yet to spool up my truck with the new build. Your turbo is a bit larger then mine :D

Re: worth losing the cat

open DP i get tons faster spool and around 4-5psi more boost. over a 3 inch cat and 3 inch exhust with no muffler, id say its worth it. i have a pt63 btw

Re: worth losing the cat

I noticed that when I took my cat off my nasty exhaust drone went away and also I had to remove it since I put a 2step on the truck and didnt want to be dumping raw fuel into it

Re: worth losing the cat

I installed a electric exhaust cutout infront of my cat and have gained quicker spool and some more boost.. sound of spool increased greatly but so did the wastegate noise

That's the way to go. Then have it closed for on the street so you don't get a noise ticket. Or hit the button if someone wants to go ;)

Re: worth losing the cat

I said screw it myself. I am going to run the RPM downpipe and exhaust with no cat or muff behind my pte 61. After i heard a GTO one day with a STS turbo kit the turbo spool sound hooked me... I say "Do It" in a good Arnold voice...see ya, Paul Z.

Re: worth losing the cat

When i hollowed out my cat on my gn, it was a very noticeable difference in performance, spooled alot faster and wot was increased, when i bought the ty it came without one, so dont know how much of a difference it made, but im sure its similar :2cents:
