Your thoughts on this setup??

Hi all,

Even before I had my truck I've been looking for a good setup to follow, but I still haven't find it. I was surfing through Richard le's webpage(AWSOME TY Richard! and LOTS of helpful info!) and saw his dyno run http://www.whitetyphoon.com/dyno/index.html as you can see he ran with a motor with L35 heads, 2.02/1.60 valves, TRW forged pistons, Eagle rods, Crane cam, 1.6 ratio rockers, stock crank, stock chip, stock turbo, stock governor, stock injectors, and stock air intake. FP set at 47psi, and had 0.0 knock retard throughout the entire run  I guess Richard kept modding his truck and he had to do all these mods in order to have a stong base. Therefore I would like to know if this would be a good/safe setup to run on a truck with stock boost and maybe a higher stall????? My goal is to hit 12's with a consistent and reliable truck. Would this be a good way to do it??? I know a SY can hit 12's for alot less, but I would be willing to pay more $$$ if this would make a really consistent and reliable truck. Anyone knows the stat on Richard's ty????

Any info or response towards my questions will be appreciatted!
Thanx!

i think heads,t/c, cam, and a bigger turbo would be consistant 12's. you dont need to pull the motor for 12's....... perhaps even less, im just stating the MOST needed.

Richard's ty is awesome i see him at our NWSTP meets...

I'd say your on the right track, but my advice to you is to save the money, learn your truck and all that goes along with modding and piece it together as a 12 sec. truck...you can do 12's no problem with the right mods and not spend very much at all as well as no pulling the motor.

pay lots of money and go 12's for sure and know nothing...

or

pay less money and go 12's for sure and know alot about your truck...

Choice seems simple to me...There is a tone of guys i see that have $$$ into there truck but nothing matched to tuned correctly....

Personally, i'd rather see a "stocker" do 12.1-12.5 with stock internals, etc. than a BIG turbo, highly modded truck do 12.0 or so...much to be said for the guy with the "stocker" running 12's!!!

just my 2cento's

I like my combo,bone stock engine with .030 forged pistons and a .430 lift cam,everything ported and polished,PT54,3" DP and a BG 50 #chip,2800 9/11 in a built tranny.12's are no prob at all,might even rip an 11.8 or 9 :D

My old Ty did 12.9 @ 103 with stock turbo, downpipe, intercooler, motor, trans, converter... on 93 octane & 16psi.

Get the right parts, do the right mods, and tune it. 12s can be done easily and safely on the stock motor IMO.

yeah I have to say that if we all had the patience and know how that you have bg we would all be running fast times. give me time, ill be able to hang. i owe everything to this community for my quasi (getting better) tuning skills.
PT54 what benifit does that have over the common pt52? would a higher stall speed be required? want some technical details Jimmy. thanks

Thanx for your replies, you guys made some strong points! Guess I'll head in the same direction I had in mind.

Thanx!

Well,as far as I know the PT54 is the biggest turbo you can use with A/C.I'm using a 2800 stall 9/11 on a JWaller built trans. The 50# injectors and awesome BG chip tuning make the total package.
You should understand that my engine was built and tuned by the McCoy's,the best engine guys that I know of,so your results may vary.
I was just trying to go fast for cheap. If my truck would not have needed a new engine when I bought it,I would have just done the PT54/3' DP,50# and Ultimate 50,and 45k BTU IC,cam, and the fuel system upgrades.
I'm sure my Ty will go 11's with what I got.Stock 2 bolt mains, stock rods, stock heads,no headers  ,stock suspension on Sears Vipers.

You can run bigger turbos with AC as far as I know. I think Keith has a 63 on his Sy with AC. I forget other examples right now.. but I'm pretty sure it's been done.

I wouldn't right away tell everyone to go with a 54. Depends on the goals, how they are going to run their truck, what they are doing in the future etc.

Good point.Due to my mechanical retardedness, I left all the part selections up to Jerry/Randy,with the assumption that the 50# chip would give me the ability to run big numbers on a small budget(uh,except for the rebuild  ),and have achieved all the goals I had for my modest build up...Just trying to throw my limited knowledge and experience out there for you guys to ponder..... :D

So say you were looking for around an 11.8-11.5 time slip for the track (at low boost 16-18lbs) yet wanted to keep the truck mainly for driving on the street with AC, good spool up & response... which turbo would you suggest then?? pt52, 53, 0r 54?

I'm thinking of the build I'd like to make in the future .. couple of years down the road.. An Air 2 Air, PT - turbo/downpipe kit, vortecs, ATR headers (or burhead - if they resume) .... Only concern besides the turbo is would the 50lb Ultimate program work reliably for something around this timeslip area... aproximately what would the chip work up to time wise? or should I consider saving for speedpro..? I don't think I would every want anything faster than that... Just something I can enjoy to drive with power that works reliably, and that I can maintain..

BTW guys,my truck is a daily driver.I do not believe you need air/air,headers,FAST,ect. to run decent numbers.
The generic 50# heads/cam chip that Brian makes kicks ass.Period.I'm running awesome times on it,get 17-20 mpg and whoop ass an Main Street.
Many thanks to BG,the McCoy's and John Waller for building my beast

11.5-11.8 on 15-16psi will require a motor that flows some air, and a larger turbo. I believe my Sy ran 11.6 or so on 15-16psi, on a couple of runs I made while turning the boost up, just for a reference. That was on a TE63.

50s will have enough headroom for them for that type of HP. My guess is that a well tuned Sy with a Vortec heads & cam combo could run that on my heads/cam chip. I think that once Jimmy gets his issues situated, with a bit more tuning, he'll be hitting high 11s easy on 20psi, and low low 12s on pump gas. That'd be high 11s in a Sy. His motor isn't that radical either, ATR cam & stock heads (or L35?). Think about it with the higher flowing Comp Cams camshaft, and some Vortecs...
