Re: boost launching

3000+ launches here with the stock front driveshaft, 68,000 miles, truck runs high 11s now but slowly made its way down from 14 seconds when I bought it 4 years ago. I have always launched in the 3-6 PSI range. I have only about 50 launches in the 5-10 PSI zone. When I launch that high the truck spins and the rear axle chatters and hops and it just feels disturbingly abusive to me so I try to avoid that. My 60's are usually mid 1.7s but I have gone as fast as 1.68 on $89 Sears Viper HX all season tires on stock rims.

Now compare my friend who launches more often and even harder than me, he is on his 2nd or 3rd front propshaft. So perhaps it's luck of the draw. But consider the quantity of launches I'm describing, too..

Re: boost launching

question....
ive experimented with the procedures that you sy/ty guys use to launch with my naturally aspirated 4.3TBI S10; and I was wondering how you guys fit all of those steps into a street race? Whenever I try it by myself on an empty street, it always seems to take a little bit of time to get set to launch.

Re: boost launching

A lot of us are asking the same question. Put simply, it sucks, and often it seems you don't have time to do all of those steps. I know one member here who was rushing the process, accidentally put forgot to put his truck back in drive, revved it up in neutral, then the light changed and not wanting to lose he slammed it into drive and twisted the input shaft to his tranny. Many others have just lost the race or not got the launch they wanted.

I'm all for better brakes instead of workarounds, but if you don't have the brakes and can find the time, the workaround does the trick.

Re: boost launching

If I'm not going to have time to build a lot of boost anyway, I skip the neutral revs. My brakes will hold a couple of pounds of boost without reving in neutral first.

Re: boost launching

practice and it wont take vary long. even after practicing though i try to get up to a stoplight has soon as possible to allow for more time. after u get the brake down watch the light to your left or right once it turns yellow place foot on gas and bring the rpms up a little once it turns red you will have about 3 seconds b4 your light turns green (at least around ks) I watch the lights no matter what car i am driving and i also try to leave with the best reaction time compared to everyone else at the light. :) but you dont want to spool the turbo to soon and have to weight 5 seconds to get your green light bc the tranny wont like that.

Re: boost launching

Yeah I just had my post 5 sec brake boost at norwalk and the tranny didn't like it, the truck rolled forward and I had to back up and restage, in which case I didn' t get the launch I wanted and ended up running a 14.1 with a 2.2 60 ft. Also about the whole ecm wont let you reach full boost when you first start the truck, how do you eliminate this with the stock ecm as I was a drag strip and I let my truck cool down like the rest of the people and only had one good run (a 13.7) most likely due to this issue, do you have to make positive boost once by reving really high and then running the truck or what?

Re: boost launching

Sounds like your breaks didn't like it, not the tranny (not that its good on that either)

To eliminate the full boost limiter, just floor the truck while pulling up to the staging lanes.

Did you rev the engine in neutral to build vacuum to set the brakes? If that sounds foreign then you need to search for the boost launch procedure. That should help your brake creap (or you need to fix/bleed your brakes) I think just reving the engine with a brief WOT will elimate the first limited boost.

Yeah, on that run I dont think I reved the engine high enough to build enough vacuum and I think I need to also rev the engine higher to eliminate the limited boost as I probrobly thought I was in positive boost but was most likely not, at the time my aftermarket boost gauge wasn't working so I was bassing everything on the stock which as we all know is highly inaccurate.

Re: boost launching

I did the Todd A. Maneuver and held it to see how much boost I could get, and then I heard a big loud BAM!

The propshaft didn't like it that much. But no problems in the Ty so far, up to about 5 lbs, that's when it starts to push through the brakes.

Wow. Did that take out anything else?

It just bent the shifter bracket on the trans, and made shift indicator a little off. I just bent it back, and it was fine....

I WAS LUCKY...
