Re: 49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale
I just turned 325,000 on her yesterday.
A year after I bought mine, I found another one that was broken down at a dealership 2 hours from me. I think they were trying to ambush the guy into buying a new car by telling him it needed a new in-tank fuel pump (little did the guy know, it had no in-tank fuel pump). After I informed the owner that the only fuel pump on the car was $1200 injection pump under the hood, the dealership started to give him different stories. Long story short, I offered him $500 over trade in, he agreed and I trailered it off the dealers lot. After getting it home, I hooked it up to my laptop, adjusted the injection pump and tossed new brakes on all 4 corners, gave it to my dad and he's been driving it ever since.
At the end of this past summer, one popped up on Craigslist for a steal of a price. It was 45 mins away from me, needed a radiator (had a spare already), a battery (also had a spare), the exhaust had a hole in the intermediate pipe (patched), the wastegate actuator was frozen (had a spare) and last but not least the intake and EGR needed to be cleaned out. At the moment, I have about $1150 into the car, including purchase price. Blue Book is $4500. Once I repaint one of the mirrors, do some touch ups and replace the front floor mats (they were missing), its going back on CL.
Understandable, I just sold my BMW partially for that reason (every time I fixed something, something else would go on the fritz), but also because I just didn't need the car anymore and I barely drove it when I did have it. Peripheral stuff breaking is just one of those things these days, I feel as a whole, automotive quality has gone down. Since you mentioned water pumps, I just replaced one on a 2006 Corolla last week that only had 112,000 miles on it. It was not a timing belt driven pump so it was probably not serviced when the belt was, but is 112,000 good for a water pump? I guess it depends on who you ask. Either way, that stuff breaks on all cars, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Honda... why? Cause its all made in China which cheap ass bearings and seals......all junk.strictly comparing a diesel engine to a gas engine, i completely agree.
however, the VW's and other euro vehicles always have peripheral stuff breaking (electronics, water pumps, etc) that drive maintenance costs up. Just my 2 cents based on limited experience within my peer group.
Yeah I saw that, I like them too, but then again buying one would negate any economy savings (for me), but if thats not the sole purpose of buying it, then more power to you. :tup:However, you can see in my first post what i'm considering getting![]()
I have a bunch of TDI Jettas, all in the 2000-2002 range at the moment. The ALH engine is amazing. I picked my current daily driver up 2 years ago with a bad auto trans after the owner just had it rebuilt 18 months earlier. I researched and then did a complete 5-speed swap a few months later after I purchased a 99.5 VR6 and a 01 TDI parts car. After doing my swap and parting out the remains of the other two cars, all 3 cars were essentially paid for and then some.what diesel do you have?

you and me both, Im rockin an old beater 1989 C1500 Chevy with a 305 in it. I've towed Jettas (obviously), Rangers, Jeeps and even an Expedition with it. It gets me by, but there is no way I could use it for any long hauling thats for sure.I really wish i had a diesel truck for towing. My 1500 does fine 95% of the time, otherwise i'm knocking on parents door to borrow their 3500 about once every 2 years.
