49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale

Re: 49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale

strictly comparing a diesel engine to a gas engine, i completely agree.

however, the VW's and other euro vehicles always have peripheral stuff breaking (electronics, water pumps, etc) that drive maintenance costs up. Just my 2 cents based on limited experience within my peer group.
Understandable, I just sold my BMW partially for that reason (every time I fixed something, something else would go on the fritz), but also because I just didn't need the car anymore and I barely drove it when I did have it. Peripheral stuff breaking is just one of those things these days, I feel as a whole, automotive quality has gone down. Since you mentioned water pumps, I just replaced one on a 2006 Corolla last week that only had 112,000 miles on it. It was not a timing belt driven pump so it was probably not serviced when the belt was, but is 112,000 good for a water pump? I guess it depends on who you ask. Either way, that stuff breaks on all cars, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, BMW, Honda... why? Cause its all made in China which cheap ass bearings and seals......all junk.

However, you can see in my first post what i'm considering getting :)
Yeah I saw that, I like them too, but then again buying one would negate any economy savings (for me), but if thats not the sole purpose of buying it, then more power to you.

what diesel do you have?
I have a bunch of TDI Jettas, all in the 2000-2002 range at the moment. The ALH engine is amazing. I picked my current daily driver up 2 years ago with a bad auto trans after the owner just had it rebuilt 18 months earlier. I researched and then did a complete 5-speed swap a few months later after I purchased a 99.5 VR6 and a 01 TDI parts car. After doing my swap and parting out the remains of the other two cars, all 3 cars were essentially paid for and then some. ;) I just turned 325,000 on her yesterday.

A year after I bought mine, I found another one that was broken down at a dealership 2 hours from me. I think they were trying to ambush the guy into buying a new car by telling him it needed a new in-tank fuel pump (little did the guy know, it had no in-tank fuel pump). After I informed the owner that the only fuel pump on the car was $1200 injection pump under the hood, the dealership started to give him different stories. Long story short, I offered him $500 over trade in, he agreed and I trailered it off the dealers lot. After getting it home, I hooked it up to my laptop, adjusted the injection pump and tossed new brakes on all 4 corners, gave it to my dad and he's been driving it ever since.

At the end of this past summer, one popped up on Craigslist for a steal of a price. It was 45 mins away from me, needed a radiator (had a spare already), a battery (also had a spare), the exhaust had a hole in the intermediate pipe (patched), the wastegate actuator was frozen (had a spare) and last but not least the intake and EGR needed to be cleaned out. At the moment, I have about $1150 into the car, including purchase price. Blue Book is $4500. Once I repaint one of the mirrors, do some touch ups and replace the front floor mats (they were missing), its going back on CL.

I really wish i had a diesel truck for towing. My 1500 does fine 95% of the time, otherwise i'm knocking on parents door to borrow their 3500 about once every 2 years.
you and me both, Im rockin an old beater 1989 C1500 Chevy with a 305 in it. I've towed Jettas (obviously), Rangers, Jeeps and even an Expedition with it. It gets me by, but there is no way I could use it for any long hauling thats for sure.

if u want reasonable priced diesel tow rig get a 12 valve cummins cant go wrong dead reliable and can get power out of them easy just make sure u get a manual trans

Didn't think Cummins had a 12V inline 6. My 5.9L cummins in my 2500 4x4 is a 24V inline 6 but I can attest that it will outperform the Duramax and Powerstroke V8's. I have the automatic and if given the right opportunity, WILL trade it in for a 6 speed. In 4 years, all I have done to it is change the fluids, replace the tires and windshield wipers. Rock solid performer!!!

Pretty sure the 06 corolla has a lifetime engine chain, no belt.

Also, I am pretty sure the stock TB on a ALH diesel is serviced at 40k miles or 60k miles unless you are using an aftermarket belt. I know some of the newer belts are rated 100k now.

They had 12vavle mechanical injection up until around 1997 it;s a very good engine.

Re: 49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale

A guy on the metro forums offered me $1,800 b/c "another metro on ebay is going for the same price". I clicked on it: 4 cylinder automatic. aka 35 mpg at best.

I really dislike the people on that forum! That are the cheapest of the cheap over there, and not very smart at negotiating.

I should throw this on Dupont registry just for $hits and giggles :rotf:

It probably is, doesnt really matter, point is it had 112k on it and it was whooped. Far too early IMO.

No aftermarket, just updated. VW changed the belt and tensioner design in the later years on the ALH. Nobody uses the 40/60 belt anymore.

early 98 was the last year for the 12V mechanical injection. 98.5-02 was the troubled years of the 24V Scummins.

So.....find a better job to waste your increase more freely so in the end, you are still left with a net 0??? Not very good advice....

The wise and prudent man realizes early in life that a penny saved is a penny earned, however that is legally achieved. That mentality has helped position me from an early age to buy what I want when I want without the aid of a lending agency.

A penny saved or a penny invested?

Re: 49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale

The 12v engines are among the best, so long as the "killer dowel pin" is addressed. I think things began to get bumpy for Toyota when they came out with the 1.8 & 2.4 engines. It is nice not having to mess with a timing belt sometimes though.

Re: 49 MPG Chevrolet Metro for sale

Well I am surprised!!

yeah, i'm not the best seller. i'm pretty rude to people asking dumb questions or offering low balls. Had a good offer from member on this board for $2k. I countered with $2,200, but the person who was actually going to get the car had a firm budget of $2k.

Bump!

I let the craigslist ad expire, but if anyone wants pics, just email me and i'll get them to you. I filled up the other day and average was 49.2 mpg. I've recorded every tank since I bought it, and can show that to interested buyers.

It's a white (very clean, zero rust) 98 Chevrolet Metro 5 speed. A/C, ABS brakes, CD player, all maintenance items are new (battery, tires, brakes, etc). Needs nothing. 174k miles, $2,400 obo

Maybe its just me, but its the type of attitude this guy has that makes people leave forums. I usually bite my tongue, but sometimes when it starts to hurt, someone has to say something. Never did care for bullies (trolls?) never let them win either. I wonder if he frequents 'ask.fm'?

Anyway, diesels, great, but do drive differently than gas engines. My first was actually an Olds 350 diesel, much misunderstood and reliable when you knew what to do with it! I have an Audi A6 tdi with an AFN diesel, never drops below 40 mpg and a Peugeot with a 2.0 hdi. Just done the cam belt on the A6 not hard. Changed out the water pump too as it was an easy hit at the same time as a precaution as I was flushing the coolant and replacing the thermostat & aux belts. 2nd belt in the 12 years I've owned it. However, diesels are more common over here.
