4l80e output shaft material

Did some testing on the output shaft of a stock 4l80e. Here is what it is made of.

Carbon - 0.50%
Silicon - 0.12%
Manganese - 1.53%
Phosphorous - 0.007%
Sulfur - 0.020%
Chromium - 0.13%
Nickel - 0.066%
Molybdenum - 0.015%
Copper - 0.12%
Aluminum - 0.024%
Iron - 97.5%

Probably means nothing to all but just 1-2 people here.

The spline on output shaft I got from GB kit seem to re-splined. The spline is not as thick as on a stock 4l80e output shaft, they are very narrow. I had it copy incase I need another one.

Cut down. Got a new cut down that has been cryo treated. Hopefully does better.:tup:

Why not do the 32 spline 4x4 and get the new input shaft? is it because George is not around? or trying to still do on the cheap side? (not to sound degrading).

George not around and I needed it quick. Plus $$$ and I am a little stubborn. People have said we can't make it work. I did the new respline shaft and cryo for $32.00 total!

Jeff and I working on a new source for the TC input for a 32 spline and a new affordable TC planetery and a maybe a hardend 27 spline output for a 80e. Hopefully this cryo treated one will hold. The guy that did it does alot of high performance stuff and felt confident that cryoing the shaft will fix the problem.:tup:

Jeremy and I are just looking for new ways, looking at old ways at different angles, and I am sharing EVERYTHING. Granted most people won't need/use the data but I am sharing it anyways.

I have a source for the 32 spline input shafts, not sure on price yet. Still need to finish my drawing and send to them.

We have ideas on a new planetary also something far less than $1600.

If/when I do offer these everybody will know what I know. Just think if everybody shared this type of info how far the board could get.

I will add if someone works or has an in with broaching of splines PM me.

I can get it done, but might help if maybe someone has an in to keep cost down.

Interesting alloy content. Looks like SAE 1547 alloy, but not 100% sure on that.

Sorry, don't have any connections with regard to broaching (or much else useful it seems).

It is close to that for sure I am not 100% myself either.

Here is 1548 specs.

Not that it matters, but I found those same basic specs for 1547, and 1548 had a slightly lower Mn content (1.10 to 1.40%)

But still not 100% that its a standard SAE or ASTM grade. Could be some funny ISO grade or some proprietary "stressproof" or other special (kinda like Carpenter 20 alloy in stainless is a special)


I couldn't find any useful mechanicals on that alloy, not that it's a suprise, since I'm sure heat treatment plays a really big part in the actual properties.

Haven't seen Matweb before. Nice... Even had some mechanicals on 1547. Doesn't look like the worst choice for a trans output shaft, but definitely not the ultimate material either.

Oh, and thanks for plowing away at some of the internals on these things. Since PG went byebye, I was concerned that nobody would take on making bits for these things and sharing info. I'd personally like to put this Tcase into a few oddball combinations. For example: how about an AWD LSx powered Lotus 7 replica? Or an awd mid engine sportscar with a LSx & T56, with the trans ahead of the engine. Would require a either a new or seriously modified tcase in order to get the torque bias to flip to the rear wheels (and to reverse rotation while I'm at it). The T56 would be much more feasible if there was a Viper 30 spline input available for the BW4472 (the Viper shaft is bigger and lets the trans live longer before going kaboom, but the GM 32 spline setup won't fit in the T56)

In short, keep at it.

I have no intentions of making a business go at this, just helping out my brothers here on the board and a few things Jeremy and I want to do for our personal trucks. BTDT.

Anybody that wants to help, has any "ins" etc lets make this a group effort.

Anybody that thinks this won't matter with a 32 spline input, think for a second... I did a stock shaft cut down or not its the same material....

I have yet to see any billet or aftermarket 4l80e output shaft. Which on that note just the material to do one is ~$300 before any machining is completed.

I'm glad you're not looking at trying to run it as a business. George shared a fair bit of info, but because it was a business, there was still alot that was proprietary. Since this is a hobby for you, I'm hoping that some of the info that would be proprietary would be available. The fact that you posted up drawings of the output shaft and adapters makes me feel that you'll share.

I doubt that we'll see a commercially available 4L80E output shaft in 300m or anything else. You're correct that the shape of the shaft doesn't lend itself to be inexpensive as a billet piece (mat'l is expensive and then there's alot of hogging of a material that's not all that free machining to get down to a rough blank). And I don't know that 300m or anything along that lines would be suitable for forging a blank to start with. That and the forgings would be pretty pricey, if one could find somebody to do them.

Sadly, I don't know that I'm much help with making parts. We've got a decent toolroom here, but most all of it is handles, not CNC (got a few, like wire EDM, but few and far between). Not the way I'd want to try to make production runs of anything.
