Diagnostic reading tool

Hey, I brought my truck into the shop today to try to hook our diagnostic tool up to it. When the tool asked what the 5th vin digit was, the choices were L,K,G,C,V,R,P,M, and Syclone calls for a T??? I think that means 4 wheel drive, I'm not sure, but what do I do here, just give up? Quick responses are appreciated!

Give up. T does stand for 4wd/AWD, a 2wd S-Series would have a S in the 5th digit. What really differentiates the SyTy Vin is the D in the 3rd digit

I suspect that the D stands for PAS. The Sy, SoGT, Ty are the only ones I know that have them (the 2 and 3rd digits are for manufacturer)

Well i just gave up I will never know what my motor is doing inside!

What diagnostic tool are you using? I know that the Snap On works, as well as Tech 1's and Tech 2's.

You will most certainly find out when you open it up and find bent rods and pistons with no ring landings. (common symptoms of detonation)

I would just try each letter until it connects.

Or get a real scantool, like Datamaster or even the snap on, tech 2 or tech 3 as mentioned.
Oh yeah, if you have an ancient laptop you could use diacom+ also.
I still have the parallel port cable for the old diacom if anyone wants it.
Diacom only runs in native DOS for those wondering if you can use it on a newer laptop the answer is no.

I have an ancient 10" touchscreen that only runs on an old dos computer. Could I have that diacom cable? It would be fun to play around with it since I have the monitor mounted in my dash already...

I will pay shipping and maybe even trade you something for it...

Dang fivetodrive, you beat me to the punch on the diag. cable :rant:

I was using the snap-on diagnostic tool, I'm guessing it is the newest one since we only got it about 3 months ago. :lol:

So just try every digit and it should work? I will give her another go tomrow morning.

I have an old Prolink hand held that's goes to 1990, I am using a vin off a 1989 sunbird (2.0 pfi turbo) and it works fine.
Goto autotrader.com search for a 89 sunbird turbo and take the vin..

I will grab a tech 1 and bring it this weekend if you are worried about check engine light

but Rob has all the tuning equipment so we may be able to check i out with that

i know for a fact that the snap on mt2500 "brick" and solus will communicate with syty. you must be entering something in wrong.

Find a turbo sunbird vin... use that.

As scan tools evolve, more and more are forgetting the OBDI stuff. Particularly the niche players like our ECM.

I really can't feel for anybody who doesn't have a scantool of their own.

1) There's Free software available. Tunerpro, scannerpro, freescan.

You obviously have a PC since you're reading this. I have had people plug a home PC into an inverter, load it into the passenger seat. If you don't want to do that, find a computer surplus store near you, and get a laptop. Or ebay, but if you do that make sure they come with a hard-drive that works and a battery + charger. You can find 'em for less than $125.

People will spend $1000s on turbos, coilovers, stereos, but won't cough up $200 for something that could keep your motor from going kaboom? Strange.

I got the scan tool at the shop! I can use it any time I want so that will do me right now.
