Re: E85 Experiment

Guys have been running e85 in their grand nationals for years and never changed out the fuel filter....did some reading into it and looked up parts for vehicles with flex fuel and fuel.....no fuel filter difference. ..but I imagine if you really wanted to feel warm and toasty inside you could find one for e85.

Re: E85 Experiment

Tonight I am converting my Typhoon over to E85. List of mods that I have specifically bought to accomplish this:

siemens 80lb injectors

Thats it. Other mods to the truck that will assist with this is my tuning setup which is an ostrichII and yada yada.

I will be removing my Alky Control setup and probably selling it, although it has served me well for a couple years now and having a neat box to play with in the cab always was fun.

I am drawing attention to this as a public view able experiment. I am going to do this, and document it to show what will actually happen, positive or negative. The tank is original to the truck, as are the fuel lines, rubber hoses, and regulator. The fuel filter was swapped out a few years ago and I am fully expecting to have to replace it soon.

Truck I am ruining:

Bfmb the girl you describe in your profile quote is very similar to a woman I work with....interesting I'll get a picture of her but I don't think she be wearing a beater and dirty flipflops....but she does have pancake butt....haha. Now back onto topic I'd like to hear more on your e85 exp. Also....I'm gonna try blending once I get my truck back up and out on the road!

Re: E85 Experiment

E85 is the way to go guys. I dont have a SY/TY so I cant add much on that subject but I do have a Supra that makes 900 rwhp on the stock motor running ethanol with the flexfuel sensor. Its seen over 800hp for the last 2+ years running E85. It loves timing, makes the turbo spool faster, and smells great when burning it! hahah

Biggest thing to change is fuel pump(s) (I recommend Walbro 416 aka 485 pump ), fuel lines (teflon or synthetic rubber will work), fuel filters ( 10 - 40 micron),and injectors. It will break down anything thats not meant for this type of fuel. Iv experienced what e85 can do to a poorly setup fuel system. I had clean my injectors out twice in 6 months....yea.....annoying. I now run a 40 micron stainless filter from aeromotive. No problems with that so far. I have ran a paper 10 micron with no problem as well.

I dont know if you guys have a flex fuel ecu option but that is something seriously to look into. Matter in fact I might be able to talk to some people to get that started with the ecu I run but for SY/TYs....ProEFI 128. Its right up there with MOTEC. One of the best bang for buck ecu's out there.

Re: E85 Experiment

E85 is definitely worth while if you aren't using the car as a DD or to commute anywhere far from home. I ran it on a supercharged 3800 that wasn't intercooled and was able to raise timing 8° at WOT as well as bump boost up 4-5psi with a smaller pulley without KR. At that point I was running out of injector and where I needed to be for advance, never bothered to do injectors or drop down before going back to 93.

The downside was having two gas stations within 20 minutes with E85 and filling up twice a week. I did make a couple of extended trips of 200-300 miles one way with it but it was a pain in the ass making a route based on getting to a gas station with E85 but it can be done. I wouldn't consider it while DD the Ty or any truck with a smaller gas tank because of the limited range, but I guess it's no different than an electric car.

It did definitely smell nicer than gas without a cat though

My E85 ECU package is plug n play for the Sy/Ty:

Re: E85 Experiment

We've got our shop truck running this system now. We tore it back down to integrate sequential ignition fire and we have a little bit more work to finish this feature up.

Our plug n play ecu box has 4l80e tranny control provisions too. We've got all the hard parts to do the conversion, but probably won't have this feature fully tested and implemented until winter.

In the meantime, 4 link conversion, front coil over conversion, rear LS rotor conversion... hands full !

Re: E85 Experiment

Hi guys

I'm bad at forums it turns out, sorry for not replying.

So, I have had the truck on E85 for a while now, and I haven't had any issues related yet. I did however break a scat crank in half for some reason and the truck was down for a bit. I ended up putting a motor back together and rebuilt the trans for fun.

in the last two years everything has been fine. I haven't been to the strip actually, but I was thinking about going this next weekend to see how everything is doing like, power wise. trucks gone 4k miles I think in that amount of time (pathetic, I know) but the fuel pumps are still in the tank and strong, as are the fuel lines and the filter. I am still running the 80lb injectors and have a good bit of room left.

with some work I seem to be averaging 15mpg. A little lower than I wanted, but honestly, thats about as good as it was on 93. I'm a little limited on the cool timing tricks I can get away with on my coil controlled 3800 (as I found out on my lt1 rotor and this rotor) but running 45* advance with target afr's at about 18 seem to be working ok.
