Re: Extreme Xtreme

I have been tracking your thread. You are doing the EZ stuff wait until the wiring

Which are you doing for electronics? ECU or PCM

Wish I had your time and energy

wiring for this will be a piece of cake compaired to the 87 Fiero GT with a 98 Grand Prix GTP 3.8 supercharged that I also built and own.

For the computer I will be useing the one from the Typhoon, for now.

I wish I had the money for the time and energy!! It is going to take a while because I'm doing it on cash, at this point. I think that headers, exhaust and paint are going to come with a payment. But that has to wait till next August.

Yep that was me:tup:

Here is a pic of the complete connector.I bought this off of e-bay as a kit (included everything.) and then I bought some V8 injector wiring -had the injector connector/pig tail. So I used six and have two spares.

Alright thanks for the pic:tup:

Time for another update:

It lives !!

The truck now runs on the 411 PCM - all the sensors checked in and it fired. (MAP sensor was a PITA) right now has a basic tune, but will get that dialed in eventually and see if I can get by with 10 lbs boost. It has a decent idle under the circumstances.

After installing the 4L60e I came to realize the newer tail housing clocks the transfer case higher and the angle of the prop shaft is not good. SO now the tail piece has to be re-clocked and I have to talk to a few welders/machinist to get their opinion of my low budget idea.

I do not think there is an adapter out there, but I believe my idea will work.

Next up is the boost gauge and wideband pod for the dash, also need a relay for the W2A pump with a manual overide. Same with the electric fan.

I am getting psyched to get this on the road -legally and thank the SYTY forum ten fold for all the info it has to offer. ;)

Are you sure you didn't just use the wrong tranny to x-fer case adapter. The AWD ones are clocked 8 degrees different than a standard 4x4 adapter. I'm 99% certain that the tail of a 4x4/awd 4L60E is identical to the tail of a 4x4/awd 700R4...

I wish it was clocked or had the part number to a piece that is clocked.

The 700R is a four bolt mounting, while the 4L60e I am using is a six bolt. I have both tailpieces and they are not interchangable. I will take some pics if the camera battery ever charges.

Interesting.. I changed the transfer case in our 99 Jimmy and I swear that 4L60E had the same 4 bolt rear tail section as every 700R4 I've ever seen...???

You are right.

At some point the 700R tail piece would fit the earlier 4L60e, but when GM came out with the three piece trans (separate bellhousing) I believe they changed the bolt pattern. (Don't quote me on this)

Supposively the even newer transmissions are up to seven bolt tail pieces.

I had to go with a 2002 trans as my harness was from a 2002 4.3 and I did not want to have wire compatability issues. (even though it would fit other years)

What is bugging me what did the '98 AWD drive trucks (Bravada/Astro) use as a tail housing? -unless it was a four bolt up to '99?

Re: Extreme Xtreme

Yet another update: ;)

Swapped out trans cross member as at some point I put the wrong one in. Thanks to a donation for the right one I drilled a 1" hole to get all the crud out of it and painted it with what was left of the POR15. (Thanks for the donation from Smaug!)

Installed front coil overs and got all that torsion crap out/off the truck - At one point I had the front rad support inches off the ground, so the coils had to be cranked up a lot to get some fender clearance. I went with 600# Eibach springs. Got to remember the newer frames are boxed and it is an extended cab, so probably is heavier than a SY/TY. Although it could probably use a 1.5 - 2" spacers for the springs, but it is okay.

Went with Gabriel air shocks in the back. Studied their application chart and got some shocks that are short enough so that it can be lowered with blocks and still be raised high enough if there is anything heavy in the bed. -also put in bell tech springs, so between the two it can come down another 1.5 " to meet the fender lip.

Put in my custom gauge mount. Don't care for the pillar mount as I do not want to advertise to other what's hiding under the hood. This was supposed to be semi flat black, but realized I used gloss clear and that threw off the look i wanted. It will come back off and get sprayed again. May be with flat black and spray with semi gloss to see how that looks.

Here is how it looks today:

custom guages.jpg

Still have to wire up the relay for the air to water pumps and then clean up the engine bay some more with zip ties etc.

Enginebay 1210.jpg

Poconojoe hooked me up with a base tune and EFIlive to get the 411PCM running. I did have it out on the street, but still wary of the cops because it is not registered etc and did manage to stall in the middle of the road when the intake hose blew off just before the intercooler . I was shitting there for a few minutes 'till I realized what happened -thought i trashed the engine even though it should be running zero boost. :squint:

SO now it is time to get home schooled on EFI live to get this SOB tuned. Joe has been an awesome help and I value his knowledge. There is a lot to absorb, but I am getting psyched to start cruising again  -Too bad it fukin 20 degrees outside

Another thanks to Tom from Sportmachines to deliver the Xtreme valence at Hooters. I'll probably save that one and am currently repairing the original one in the basement. The driveway has a steep decline going out to the street and there is a whole lot of scrapping going on. Sucks and can't wait to move to a flat driveway so the truck can be lowered more.

No turning back now-too many hours and cash pumped into this to drop it. :squint:

Re: Extreme Xtreme

You guys are wrong.. The ZR2 frame is different. Its got a fat section welded behind the upper and lower control arm mounts the push the arms out the extra difference. I've always wondered what the difference was and I was never able to find a definitive answer online. Just so happened that I pulled into a parking lot about a month ago and there was a ZR2 and regular 4x4 parked right next to each other. Since I'm not too proud to go crawling under other people's cars I did just that.

That being said, I love the wider stance of the ZR2 trucks and there is no reason that they can be lowered just as much as a sy/ty. These pads behind the LCA mounting points only moved them out, not down so it would not change anything as far as lowering is conernet.

The CAs themselves are identical.

-Matt

You are right and also wrong. The frame is definitely slightly wider up front to add to the track width. However the control arms are also modified to extend out another 1" 1 1/2" as well. The combination of the 2 things is what gives the suspension an additional 3" width. you can see the extensions on the end of the lower arm in this picture - http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee157/kennybasham/embaixo2.jpg

leadfoot, Just read your whole thread. Great build so far. What about the hellwig rear bar did you dislike? Was it the tubular one that you purchased?
Looking forward to seeing some more progress. You've got a really Frankenstein on your hands here.

It's a tubular bar and the size/thickness seems okay, but I wished it mounted to the existing suspension rather than the brackets they supply. Something seems weird about it.:squint:

As for Frankenstein -The truck looks totally stock, but is AWD drive and turbo power to build on.
