Finally a cure for leaking head studs!

Finally a cure for leaking head studs! I have built or been involved dozens of sbc engine builds most of witch have had head studs. I have tried every thing one could imagine to keep the studs from leaking. I’ve used ARP’s stud sealant pipe dope Teflon tap RTV sealant you name it I’ve tried it. Guest when you think you’ve got it a week or so after you’ve been driving it you notice coolant on the shop flood where it was parked “DAMIT” not again.
So you go to the parts store and pick up some K&W block seal until now this has been the only way to stop the studs from leaking. I guest freshened up my small block about two months ago I pulled all the studs and cleaned the treads with a wire wheel on a grinder and spared them with brake cleaner. For the block I ran a sharp tap in all the holes and clean them with brake cleaner and blew them dry with shop air. Now for the cure! I bought a large bottle of HIGH TEMP LOCK TITE and used a generous amount on the studs. When you screw the studs in the block snug them down with a pare of pliers and wipe the excess lock tite up with a rag and your done! I put a stock head bolt in a old block I had in the shop and let set over night guest to see if the bolt would come out. It was a little stiff coming out but not permanent by no means! I hope this helps some one on there next engine build.

thanks...i will be going through this in about a day...just finished my vortec heads and intake work...i used aviation form-a-gasket on my last try and it worked alot better than white brush type teflon...arp strictly says to hand tighten them when you thread them into the block...to me, (<not an expert) it would make more sense to torque the studs into the block even if its only 5ft lbs...sometimes i wonder if studs are even worth all the damn trouble...it seems like when dealing with arp head studs, even if you follow the manufacturers installation instructions, they tend to leak...

Never torque a stud! it puts stress on the deck.
I put my studs in dry the last time and then put silicone around the stud under the washer. not a leak at all.

What about using permatex "high tack gasket sealant"?

thats for the gasket not the stud itself. i've used it as well as copper spray on the cometics even though they say specifically NOT to put anything on them :)

What ever it takes!!

The real "cure" is to just find a GM Bowtie Block they have blind holes that don't go into the water jacket...therefore no leaks. Good luck finding one.
