Re: Frustrated

OK, I finally got my chip with zero KR at 18psi boost. I added more timing through out the chip till i got some KR. Then I added a little more KR to a thrid chip in anticipation for higher octane fuel. I went to the track tonight and ran a best of 13.56. I'm not happy as I purchased an rpm stage 3 turbo 60/1, 2800 stall with alky. A/F were 11.4/1. 60ft times were 1.8, top speed was 97-99mph. I was launching at 7psi. I had zero KR with all 3 bins. I used another bin that I get 3-4KR on street fuel and I got zero KR with 20psi using 100 octane. I ran a best of 13.56. So now, how the heck do I get into the 12's with this combo? I was told I could easily get into the 12's with this combo (or even the 11's with this turbo and chip)???? I know that I will proballly need some heads for 11's and maybe injectors. I'm Frustrates as after many hours of tuning, I finally go zero KR with good Air fuel ratios and I"m still running 13.5-13.7. What gives:tdown::squint:

sorry for the rant, I"m just really tired:(

Man i know how you feel! I have gt3582r, vortec heads, 412 cam, and running the same as you are.

Re: Frustrated

I doubt you'd find much useful info from EGT... probe location can vary the readings a lot.

On 108 or better race gas, you should be able to run at least 20 degrees of log-displayed timing (not what shows up in your tables, unless you reset things to make them equivalent). From there, you can go up in boost until you hit your knock threshold. I've found over the years that if you get much less than 16-17 degrees on the stock heads and cam, that power really falls off. Regardless of what you do for boost.

I have some suspicions as to what the TIP ratios at higher boost are on these turbos, but the only way to prove it is with a measurement.

If you're careful, you can drill/tap a thick area in the turbine housing near the flange without pulling the turbo.

I was thinking that playing with timing and looking at EGT's would tell us whether increasing heat in the exhaust manifold would help counter the higher boost. But, it seems we're looking at a flow rather than pressure problem.

I'm beginning to think that these biggers turbos on stock heads and cam can provide a bit of an increase but not a lot... maybe best to maximize timing first at your indicated 20 degrees then bring boost up till KR just indicated. I've been fighting the same thing on mine and that was going to be my next test this weekend. New heads and a new cam are sounding better all the time :)

I don't think the heads and cam are the problem at all. I've had stock heads in the 11s, and others have as well. Some in the very low 11s.

Not to belabor the point, but I suspect the turbine inlet pressure measurement would be very enlightening.

Ok how do I find the turbo I let psi ? My tuner pro is readind the same psi as my aftermarket boost gauge

Re: Frustrated

I had read that post, however, I'm a bit confused on how and where exactly to drill and tap the housing. I figure I can put a fitting in the turbine housing, tap it and find my reading, later plug th hole with the correct size plug. Would this require me to remove the turbo?

Yup, I see where you're heading with that request Dig... I see my wallet opening up soon ;)

Re: Frustrated

I don't know much about Ty's, but I had my Sy for a week when I went to the track in Miss. and ran 13.5's, pure stock. Changed the thermostat and ran 13.3's. Changed the chip and put in racing gas and went 12.9's. So IMO, your Ty should at least run those numbers with the mods you have.

You wouldn't have to take it off. Tap a 1/8" NPT hole, put a compression fitting in there, length of small copper tube to a gauge.

Alex had one plumbed into his Ty at Homecoming... maybe he's got pictures?

Re: Frustrated

These engines act similar to GN's. And most boosted engines.

The larger the turbo (Not excessive) will make more power with a good tune and a matching converter.

Somthing's missing on the tune or the alky is too much. Our Ty All stock with 3bar chip,FMIC on 18psi

went 13.0@101mph on just regular 93pump gas. I don't use alky on any of my cars/trucks just pump

gas on a good tune with no knock.

Wish you had code59 so we could look at the chip file. ;)

Re: Frustrated

Sorry, one more thing I forgot to add. I am using code 59. I've been so over-stressed as I've go so much going on right now. I just quit my dream job as a paramedic in a high speed system. I took a lateral position at a different department with a little better base pay. Consequelnty, I've done martial arts since I was 7, now 45 and I've got multiple injuries I've been dealing with.....tendonitis in both arms, a shoulder injury and a knee injury...... All this plus 2 months of freaking heavy hose training. And to top it off, my wife is pregnant...unexpectedly. A nice supprise, but very unexpected.

So, this whole week has been filled with PT appointments, cleaning house, getting my old gear turned in and new gear fitted, squeezing in a day at the track and tuning....you get my point. I"m dead tired. I had a week off and I had some sort of crazy idea I was going to get some rest in:rant: Oh well, life is all about change.

I would be happy to post my bin, but I cant seem to figure that one out, and right now, I don't have the time to figure it out. I did send it to Rob (great guy by the way!) and thankfully, he is taking a peak at it.

I told him my futre plans for the bin are as follows;

Since I have a chip with zero KR on pump gas here's my plan;

Turn the boost down to 14psi. Tune without alky for a max timing table with zero KR. Then tune with alky for the same results.

Next, turn the boost up to 15, then 16 - 20.

anyother ideas?

Oh yea, I do want to plumb a fitting with a gauge for the inlet pressure. What kind of gauge should I use? Compression testor, fuel gauge, or oil gauge?

Thank you all for your help:tup:

Re: Frustrated

I was reading up on a few threads regarding the Garrett turbos in relation to .63 AR housing that work with our stock DP.

.63 AR housing is noted to be inefficient on the top-end, which seems to be very accurate results, based on my experience.

I've also read that by going bigger .82 AR housing will result in better top-end. However I've also read that it will not work with the stock DP.

Granted I'm not 100% sure that Mike from RPM is using the .63 AR housings, so Mike, perhaps he could chime in and provide some suggestion/solutions/clarifications...

Re: Frustrated

The turbo that RPM sold me was a .63 exhaust housing.

What turbo are you running?
