Re: Marlboro Feature, Hemmings Muscle Machines - UPDATE!

Well, I sent my email:

Hello,
My name is Austin Mears, and I have been a loyal reader of Hemmings Muscle Machines since the magazine first came out. My father-in-law has a subscription, and I always thumb through his issues. Every time I see a Syclone, I immediatly go to the news stand and buy myself an issue.

I happen to own one of those rare trucks that you guys seem to enjoy writing about, and I activly purchase anything that even mentions my truck. I have enjoyed reading your reviews of the rare trucks, and hope that in the future you will continue to keep them alive in print. I really enjoyed the recent feature you did on the Marlbro Syclone, and I know a lot of other SyTy owners that feel the same. We feel that our trucks have been forgotten about, especially since GM no longer offers most of the parts that make our trucks different from a stock S-Series truck. It is a great feeling to look at a reputable magazine and see your pride and joy being praised.

There are a few other rare Syclones that you may want to do other articles on. GMC shipped around 50 Syclones to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. These trucks are slightly differnt from a normal Syclone, with a different instrument cluster, and a few other minor changes. There were two Challenge Syclones that toured the United States promoting the performance of the truck. They were white with grey cladding, which is very unique because the only other Syclones that were not originally painted black were the Marlbro ones. There was a PPG Pace Truck that has a custom grey, yellow, and purple paint scheme.

I would like to see a few articles on the Typhoon as well. I know that the Typhoon is not quite as rare, and slightly slower due to additional wieght, but they should be given some attention as well. I think that an article on the Sonoma GT would draw some attention from your readers as well. There were only 805 GT's made, all in 1992. They had the basic look of a Syclone, but were powered with a Vortec 4.3L V-6, and were rear wheel drive only. They were marketed as the "poor man's Syclone."

You have done a very fine job at keeping many of Syclone and Typhoon owners happy. Even though they made less than 7,700 total Syclones and Typhoons made, the owners are a very tight knit community, and any time that our rare beasts are mentioned, we flock to the newstands and we each buy many issues. I look forward to reading more articles about these truck in the future.

Thanks for the coverage,
Austin Mears

Has anyone seen it out lately? I was out the other day in Books A Million and the only Hemmings I saw had a Nomad or something on the cover.

It's out, I got mine at Books A Million, I had to dig cause it was behind a couple other mags. There are several Hemmings magazines, this is a Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine not the regular Hemmings.

I just got mine today as well.... was falling asleep waiting for my in-law grandparents to get done at the walk-in clinic when I realized there was a books-a-million next door.

Bam, marlboro on the cover, I pranced around the store for a bit after finally getting one. I have to say, books-a-million has a butt-ton of mags... wish I could buy all the automotive ones and still afford my morgage.

I bought a few at a local Fred Meyers...Safeway also has it. It took a little while for some of the larger chains to get it.

I haven't found one yet. Hopefully I can find one soon, otherwise I'm going to have to pay a premium from one of you guys to get one. Anybody got an extra they are willing to part ways with at a reasonable price?

They had several copies at my local Barnes & Noble. I only picked up 2 'cause I was in a hurry and had limited fundage. If anyone wants me to get them one, I could try and stop by there tomorrow. No premium...the mag is $4.24 and I can mail them via Media Mail which would be another $1.82. (priority would be $3.85) PM me if you can't get one and want me to run over.

Great issue...covers muscle trucks well. Though majorly bummed that Ty was not pictured. :squint:

Pretty cool, no? Anyone catch any mistakes I made in the original email that I should correct? How many Saudi Sy's were there?

807 Sonoma GTs. As for the Saudi trucks, this is the best information I've found, though the figure seems high.

Saudi Syclones....A saudi dealer wanted some syclones and typhoons I believe 95 Syclones and 35 Typhoons in all black. They were shipped over with protective coating so they would not get hurt. The GM Saudi Dealer left them outside with this coating which baked it on the paint. The Saudi Dealer could not sell them so they were sent back. Koss recieved the delivery and said that they were a complete mess. He power washed them and EVERYTHING was coated in sand. The windows didn't work and the were all full of sand and everyone had dead batteries. The local dealer wanted them and offered to paint them. It took them 2 days to strip the coating off of them.
I've also heard a figure of 30 Saudi Sys, but I don't remember where I heard that either.
