mitsu balancing question

I've read there are 2 method comonly used in turob building.

The older stuff was built with seperatly balanced parts, and simply bolted together, while the newer stuff (and I believe a mis-conception by all that ALL turbos are done this way) balanced as an assembly.

Looking at my mitsu, It appears the balancing work is done individually per piece. the compresser wheel has some semi-circles missing from the back-plate of the exduser side. The nose of the wheel is missing some material. However, the nut holding the turbine/comp wheel together is entact ( from my understanding parts balanced as an assembly usually show adjustmets here).

So my theory is, if they are balanced as individual parts, I should be able to replace just a compressor wheel, without having to get the assembly ballanced.

Can any one back that up or throw it in the dirt?

also... where could one pick up a 20g wheel?

dont know much about mitsu's, but compressor wheels are may or may not be different in physical size. if you just swap wheels, im not sure if the compressor housing will have to be machined. certain wheels have the same inducer size, and others dont. let us know what you find out on the 20G vs. 16G you have me curious.

thought I'd bring this back from the dead since I have some info to add...

I finnally got a hold of a TD06H-20G and a 12cm and 14 cm exhaust housings.

some facts from looking at things.

There is a noticable dif between the exhaust housings, the cm size is obviously how much volume there is in the housing. a cubic cm ist that much however. The exhaust inlets are all exactly the same, 4 bolt, and smaller then the outlet of our stock manifolds. All could use some porting to match them up.

The 20g wheel is bigger then the 17c. It would require machining to fit in the tdo6 comp housing...

However, looking at the tdo6h and tdo6 comp housings, they appear almost identical with exception of the slightly larger bore for the wheel, and the outward appearance of the mounting tabs for the wastegate ( mitsu smartened up and designed it so you can turn the housing a bit and still mount the wastegate easily). So I believe if the stock housing was machined to fit the 20g wheel, the comp housing would effectively be the same ( I was concerned the 20g's may have been slightly dif to take advantage of the particular wheel).

the td06h turbine side definately will NOT fit in the tdo6's housings. 1 the turbine is bigger, and 2 I believe the whole center section is of a larger diameter.

my suspicioun that the center section is larger leads me to believe one could not machine a tdo6 comp housing bore, and it fit onto the tdo6h, however I'm not positive.

Otherwise the tdo6h is a bolt on. Same comp inlet/outlet size. Same exh inlet/outlet flanges.

I have yet to bolt it on to find out if all the fittings bolt on, but I'm positive they do.

nevermind i see you figured it out.

er yea. td06 20g wheel wont fit directly into the stock housing... but Im not worried about that now... just wanna see if I can bolt on a new wheel to replace a tired one (also this may help those who have stockers that have a bit of damage to the comp wheel .. aka eat intake tube)
