MSD woes

I'm having some problems with my MSD 6AL2. I sent it back to msd recently, and they told me it tested out fine. I am getting a slight sputtering and lack of power at higher rpm's (4500+), and it went away when I reinstalled the old ignition. The ground to the box is rock solid (tested). Any insight on what could be causing this problem?

Re: MSD woes

Do you need the MSD for some reason? 2 step? Almost sounds like ign cut. Do you have a high RPM pill in it? Pull that and see what happens. Does it run fine without it? Then leave it off.

Installed for the two step only. No pills, it is adjustable. Almost agree with the leave it off, but it should work. BYW, new coil didn't seem to make any difference.

Re: MSD woes

whats rev limiter set at?.....also..make sure that the power wire goes directly to the battery..and ground.....reason for this is noise interference to the msd box, it causes it to misfire and cut out.

another possibility....what are your plugs gapped at?

will rewire direct to battery. plugs gapped tight (.0020), but I will loosen them up a bit soon. thought it could be plug gap too big, but it ran perfect with the stock ign.

Re: MSD woes

Datalog a run with and with out the MSD and see what happens to your afr's. Might be a lean misfire. MSD helps alot. If you were on the edge of fuel with out MSD, the unit may have pushed you over the fence.

I have data logged many runs with the MSD installed. Afr about 11.1 or so spraying heavy meth. Also has zero knock retard. Not really a misfire, but just a lack of pull on the big end that goes away when I re-install the stock ign. Problem is also intermittent, sometimes fine with MSD, others the break up on higher RPM's occurs. I am leaning heavily toward a weak 12v source, but I appreciate all input.

Re: MSD woes

If the better +12v connection doesn't solve the issues , try opening the plugs up to 22-24 and see if it helps .

Re: MSD woes

seemed to run good yesterday at WOT after I wired the MSD directly to a 10 ga. copper from the battery. I will open up my plug gap a bit soon.

Re: MSD woes

I am still having the intermittent problem of slight sputtering at WOT/ higher rpm's. I have check and double checked the grounds and 12v sources. The MSD box has been removed and I am running the stock ing. The sputtering issues still seems to come and go, with no correlation that I can find. Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: MSD woes

Not trying to be a smart ass but, have you tried changing your plug wires? I had this same prob. Wires were not burnt or anything, just had a random misfire at high rpm. Thought it was my MSD as well but it was a bad set of wires.

Yes, I did try that, as well as the plugs, cap and rotor, and ing. control module. Is there any way it could be trans. related, and just feels like a miss? I will try replacing the plugs again just for grins. They are gapped at .028 and I am spraying pretty heavy meth.

Re: MSD woes

As posted earlier, I am not currently running the MSD, I am running the stock ign. My point was that I am still having the same issue with the stock ign. as I had with the MSD.

Re: MSD woes

Could be a prob in the tune. Maybe too rich when the meth comes on? I'm no tuner just trying to think what could be causing it. Intermittent probs can be the worst. does it do it on hot and cool days? Maybe the tcc not always locking? Could be so many things. Is your fuel press good under boost?

Re: MSD woes

Today, when I was having the line pressure on my 700r4 checked out (they were fine), my down pipe came disconnected from the rest of the exhaust. The truck ran great, with no studder. I am thinking that the slight studder could be an exhaust restriction? I do have a bypass and a electric cutout that I could run when I want to. Any thoughts?

Code what?
Where did it come loose at? By chance your wideband o2 was getting some leaking o2 past it causing an overly rich condition and making the ign break up.

What tune are you using? Chip?
