no boost.. what could the problem be?

Wondering what to look for with a truck that won't produce any boost.. and if you try it'll just kind of bog down or studded.

I right away figured an intake coupler to the a2a setup popped off but nope.. call silicone couplers are secured accordingly.

Then wondered if there was a crack in the crossover pipe or maybe the pas side header but visually can't seem to find one.

Next I figured something with the wastegate, maybe stuck open but didn't see anything out of the ordinary visually.

No check engine light at this point, which is pretty weird.

Fuel pressure seems fine and rises accordingly if you try to get into boost

Soo what other suggestions would you guys give on this matter?

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

From what I read in this thread http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69369 you might have a few things going on so best thing you can do is try to get it running good on a stock chip, or a starter code59 bin and wire your wbo2 to the ecm so you can read it in datamaster.

Try to think back to the time you first noticed it, was it when you added alky, the 3 bar cal, the accel coil, etc..

If you think you are running out of injector you can either verify it using the wb data or just buy a new set of 60's (shameless plug) and get a code59 bin.

well the truck with all it's mods prior to the waller chip and 3bar map ran perfect. 18psi, 93 octane and no kr at all except once in a while during up shifts. after waller chip and 3 bar map it's ran soo lean i've been scared to drive it or get into boost. yanked that combo and put the pitbull and 2bar map back in and it was back to normal and after driving it for a few days in a row all of a sudden no boost although from no throttle to slight throttle i can hear the compressor so I don't know.

If you think you are running out of injector you can either verify it using the wb data or just buy a new set of 60's (shameless plug) and get a code59 bin.

I believe i'll be purchasing 60's after I sort this issue out and before I get dig to start tuning me so i may be talking with you depending on what this issue turns out to be.

Take your elbow off and see if the compressor spins

I can hear the compressor working from off throttle to on but it won't hurt to check. thanks for the suggestion

Restriction on the intake side, like a clogged air filter? Collapsed hose? Double check that WG is actually closed.

Ryan,

Dpending on how bad the chip was tuned, it could of clogged the cat, if you got a cat on the truck. IO had that issue with Garth's old truck and unbolted the downpipe and wham got boost again. Bolted it back up and no boost,

That is what i would check if you have one on the truck.

I had the same problem with my ty but it was due to my turbo leaking oil. Clogged the cat right up. Opened the dump and the boost was back.

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

Ralph, Jeff thanks for the suggestion but my truck has had an open cutout on it for the last three years. This turbo isn't loud at all unless your at wot so I've never had a problem with it being an open setup.

Don, My intake is simple, a cobra elbow to a cone filter lol... but I took the cobra elbow off this morning, spun the compressor wheel and it's spun like it has 1k miles on it because it does. It's also clean looking no oil or sludge etc

Checked out the ic and silicone couplers more and nothing wrong there... so I guess the next step after I get done with the mustang is to poke around at the wastegate some. Even though it looks clean and closed at idle which to me would tell me if it was seized or stuck i'd be making tons of boost no none but whatever. One step at a time with this damn thing although my wife's been after me to sell it so she can have her pt cruiser back lol

but im currently working to get my mustang road worthy

also why don't you buy my truck i'll sell it cheap

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

OK update... no boost, high idle in park (in d idle is perfect) and code 35 which is the iac.

I checked out the wastegate and it appears fine as does the vacuum lines to and from.
The iac shows in datamaster as zero at idle but under any kind of tps voltage it shows either 6 or 38 and doesn't really matter what mph or tps so that appears a little wacky to me but not sure.

So how does one tell if the iac is bad or is on it's way out? and could it be possible that a faulty iac is preventing me from building any boost?

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

Another member had a cone filter on a cobra elbow, which was unsupported. After some age the cobra got spongy enough that on acceleration the cobra would bend/collapse, shutting off airflow to the turbo..... try it once with the filter off and see what happens.

Rob,

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't concider that to be a factor but it just maybe the issue because my cobra elbow is unsupported and is two or three years old now

Just to for warn you once he got his power back he killed his motor shortly after

But I guess that is the norm with these trucks :rotf:

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

Okey, cobra elbow isn't the issue.. she's very firm still but I removed it anyways and took the truck for a quick spin around the block.. same deal it's as if when the boost is suppose to come on it falls flate.

I took the truck out tonite to go pickup a rust free hatch for my mustang and on the highway in between concert barriers where you can really hear your engine and all the sounds you don't want to hear. Well mine sounded clean and like an open down pipe because it is open :) but I could hear the wastegate open... so im 99% sure my issue is that either the actucator is f'd up or the wastegate is stuck open somehow even this turbo has less then 200 miles on it. So if and when I get a good amount of time to jerk around to my self i'll dig at the waste gate a bit and see whats up.

Just to for warn you once he got his power back he killed his motor shortly after

Don't say that... this engine's hardly ever seen kr, maintained like crazy and never been abused yet.
If it did let go for unknown reasons then this shit is getting sold as a roller and i'll buy a kenne bell for my mustang :)
I don't have the money or time to go through a build.. the truck never moves as it is and is a great argument starter lol

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

If it makes you feel any better I toasted mine in 1k miles, maybe less. All due to knock and it's my own damn fault. Head gasket is fixed pulling the pan tomorrow to look at the bearings. Whoopee...

Don,

I always look forward to your post man.. Love the fact that you use your syclone for what it was ment to be used for and have fun doing it. GOod luck with the new build man look forward to see some more awesome post about it and your goals being broken

Re: no boost.. what could the problem be?

god damn it... i've adjusted the hell out of my wastegate and nothing.

How can you trouble shoot the wastegate allocator to determine whether or not it's fubar'd? I should prob make another thread with that question and will if no one seems to know or answer in this one in a few hours.

Thanks for everyone's help this truck hasn't had any problems ever and i've owned it since 01 so I guess shit was bound to happen sooner or later :)
