No boost

Hey guys i was contacted by a fellow sytyer looking for some assistance diagnosing a no boost issue, he can not post yet input appreciated
thanks matt

Matt,

Here is a list of the mods as I know it:
-ACVr boost controller
-Greedy turbo timer
-Applies Technology and Research chip (STG Racing CB-16y6)
-7th Injector INJ-7B Injector Controller (1992) from Applies Technology and Research
-no cat installed
-3 inch exhaust

Missing:
-stock boost conroller
-stock map sensor
-stock MEMCaL

Symptoms:

-No boost
-vehicle doesn't rev over 4k
-no loose cold air side leaks
-no hot side leads
-check all vacuum lines(several times)

Thoughts:
-chip is causing the vehicle not to boost, symptoms consistant with valet mode, but chip data box showing
15 lbs boost street mode
-I even disconnected the boost controller and ran the vacuum line from the turbo to the wastegate, still no boost?
-The vehicle has 112k miles, the engine runs tight.
-No air blowing out of the oil filler cap(when removed and power-braking the vehicle raising boost)
-I have ordered the stock MAP sensor, the blow off valve...
-trying to locate a stock MEMCal

Re: No boost

Check to see if the turbo is damaged or spins freely, that's an easy check. Check to see if the actuator arm has fallen off the wastegate flapper valve on the turbo.

The not revving over 4K sounds like a valet chip thing, or possibly something wrong with your ignition? When I blew the booster line off my intake it wouldn't rev past 4K either, but idled very high (obviously). Check again for larger intake leaks.

I have a stock chip if you need it. CalgarySS lent it to me years ago, and it's still in my glove box.

Re: No boost

If you dont have the stock MAP sensor, or the stock MEMCAL to piggyback onto, how does the truck even run.

Re: No boost

Fellow Sy/Ty owners,

The truck idles fine (meaning no vacuum leaks), the problem is consistant with being in Valet mode... it wil accelerate, and build a small amount of boost, but nothing serious, not even 5 lbs.

I am going to remove the piggy back from the prom and use the direct connect for the std 8lbs of boost on the wastegate (pending it hasn't been adjusted, change from the 3 bar to a 2 bar MAP Sensor.

I am thinking the Chip is internally stuck in valet mode, while displaying other tune ups...
The turbo is sucking very strong when you raise the rpm

I will keep you all posted a little later tonight...

Re: No boost

Thanks Peoples.... I have been working with Mike Lee on this problem. The issue now is locating a stock 2 bar Map sensor (locally) The part number I have is 213-1545...

My PROM info is SY137 Pit Bull (1141196), can anyone share any info on this chip

Re: No boost

I had a similar issue with my stock turbo a while back
the problem was a broken shaft at the turbine impeller
from the hot side and the intake was still sucking air ..

Re: No boost

ALCON,

Today, I replaced all vacuum lines, seperated the PROM from the adapter(multi stage map controller).
I did a reset (remove postive terminal) and took for a test
MODS:
-current 3 bar map sensor
-Apexi boost controller connected in place
-PROM is a SY137 Pit Bull (street)
Also, picked up a stock Map sensor (GM P/N 1256-9240/AC Delco P/N 213-1545), but it didn't match my conectors...

Results:
-She made boost, but is was short lived... I reached an indicated (10 to 12 lbs) on the stock guage
-2nd time around the block, it made an indicated (like 5 or 6 lbs) on stock guage
-3rd time around the block, it made an indicated (0 lbs) it was right between the vacuum green and the postive
orange

So, I am assuming the eletronics is sensing something and shutting the boosting power down...

Next step:
- get some software to determine what the electronics are sensing or seeing
-determine if the orignal Map sensor wiring has been changed
-if changed/obtain the correct wiring to use the correct Map sensor

What are your thoughts on this issue?

Thanks:
:D To some new friends Canada, named Harvey & Matt. They have been consistantly helping me alot.

Does anyone know where can get the software to monitor my Ty's data?

Re: No boost

Also, will any catalytic converter work or does it has to be an orignal unit? Mine was removed from the previous owner

Re: No boost

The ECM will pull timing if you are making too much boost and it will fall on it's face. You should be able to make more than 0 psi though.

If you are making 0 boost, your problem probably lies elsewhere. Check your IC hose and other connections to make sure you're not bleeding off.

What state is your fuel pump/filter? Have you checked timing? How old are the plugs/wires/cap?

Re: No boost

Are you using an actual boost gauge or relying on the one on your dash?

I have my doubts that it's pulling boost due to knock, I don't think it can pull that much. If you have just a vac line from the nipple on your turbo directly to your wastegate actuator, it'll make ~8psi, give or take. I don't think that the ECU can make LESS boost than that. If you don't have this setup like I described it, do it, and see what happens.

As far as the rev limit, I think it's stuck in valet mode or something like you say. Like I said, I have a stock chip, I can send it to you, but it may take some time getting there. It's courtesy of CalgarySS (Gord), he gave it to me to troubleshoot some issues but I ended up not needing it. I can ship it, and if it helps you, great. If you don't need it, please ship it back.

Re: No boost

Quickstop,

I have only owned it for about a week. Changed all fluids and all vac lines. I haven't changed the fuel filter nor the pump. If it was a clogged filter it wouldn't run consistantly. Normally if the filter was clogged, it would run normally, then shut down when a demand was onthe system. I think its all eletronic. The map sensor and the Pitbull chip is not communicating properly for (1). 2ndly, I need the software to see what's info is being sent; knock, timing, etc

Re: No boost

I will change the fuel filter and perhaps the pump. This trk has an aftermarket fuel rail and possibly larger injectors. If I do a reset (disconnect the+ terminal) it will make boost, then slowly stop making boost.

Re: No boost

When you have your turbo connected directly to you waste gate actuator it is a mechanical connection no electronics involved and should produce 8# or so as other poster has stated.

Re: No boost

Justoyz - no worries, you'll get there.

As mentioned by Mike and Lowest Form, disconnecting the boost solenoid is the first thing - min boost is 8psi on the internal spring. If you are making less than that then there is something else up. Also and again as mentioned, I didn't think the chip could pull timing that far back. Maybe it is valet as you said.

Have you got an alternate chip you can try? If you have different injectors then you need to find out what they are as well. 50# can be really intermittent.
