no start

I hate to post a no start thread, but I"m at a loss.

I recently rebuilt and replaced my transmission. Turns out the previous owner rebuilt the engine & did not check the fly wheel. It was off .025 and caused the transmission pump to fail. I could see the rub marks on the pump where the converter turns the trans pump :(

Anyway, I had the trans rebuild and I finally got it done today. NOW...she will not start! I"m pissed! I was thinking that I did put in the wire loom device on the drivers top side of the transmission, but I did not connect any grounds to the bell housing on the drivers top side. Some of my previous vehicles I had to do this, but I don't think the SyTy's have the grounds here. I checked above to find some ground wires and they were connected somewhere..but where????? kind of hard to see with all the freaking wires! :squint:

I do have some spark, but it looks weak but I do have spark. I replaced the distributer a little over a year ago.
Fuel PSI is @ 45 while cranking & I hear the fuel pump kick on. fuel pump was replaced a little over a year ago too.

I"ve no clue. SPARK, FUEL, AIR.

My Ty has sat almost a year with a full tank of super 92 octane and some HEET in the tank.

HELP Please!

Re: no start

Grounds do matter...I'm does turn over though? Spark yes...When you start it does the tach bounce when your cranking it over? If not I bets it's the ignition module....you can take ICM and get it tested at oreallys....vatozone...or crapa. Where's Dave p. When ya need him I'm sure he will have some ideas also...so will others..

Re: no start

Thanks for chimin in. I did not see any ground wires connected to the top drivers bell housing. I may be wrong, but I don't remember any being there except a wire loom which I did put back.

Do our trucks have ground wires connect to the top drivers side bell housing? I looked from above to find a few grounds that were connected with strong resitance as if they were attached to something secure. I'm hoping to find a definitive answer on this one...grounds atteched to the bell housing or not? I dont' remember seeing any in that plethra of mess, but I could be wrong:roll:

I'll go check for the bounce on my tach. I doubt it is a bad module as I replaced my entire distributer last year..but who knows?

THANK YOU for your help! I"m just really tired, frustrated after all of that work and no results :(

Re: no start

OK, my tach is at zero with no bounce.

I did find that my Check Gauges light in the bottom left flashes on & off while i"m cranking the engine over??? I have no idea if that is normal while starting the engine or not?

I looked in my Typhoon Service Manual Supplement and I do not see any ground wires connected to the bell housing.

Re: no start

There is a ground from the back of drivers side head to the firewall. Also two grounds at the drivers side front of the intake manifold. But if it cranks you've got ground from the motor back to the bat. Check the two plugs on the dist and the two at the coil. Are they in all the way? You could be just completely out of time. Does it even try to fire?

Thnaks Don for the reply!

Here is the deal. My Ty's transmission started to started to slip last April. I parked it and only drove it on to the driveway to wash every month. I started her every week. She was full of 92 super. In June last year, I heard an awful screach....trans pump went out and then she would not move. She always ran amzing till then. I pushed it into my garage where it sat as of today. I added a few bottles of HEET to the fuel since I knew it was gonna be sitting for a while.

I get my new trans back last week and over teh past few days, I had put the new trans in and BTW...What a PITA! I did not think there was the typical SBC ground attachemnts tot he drivers side top bell housing. THe only thing I remember was that funky wire loom which I did put back.

After I get everything installed, she does not fire ;( The battery is a bit tired, but I run my battery charger while cranking her over. She turns over like a champ..but no fire.

Spark is there, not impressive, but I do see spark
Fuel PSI is 45 while cranking.
I attached the coil plugs multiple times, no changes.
I doubt it is out of time. I have not touched anything since i had parked her last year. She is @ stock timing and has always ran amazing.
I"ve yet to check the plugs
I need to put a vac pump to my fuel pressure regulator
.....Anything else I can check here???????
......Shot gun to the grill & light it on FIRE :D

I'm at a loss...spark, fuel, air.

I have spark, with stock fuel psi....what gives here?????:(

Re: no start

You've said weak spark. Without seeing it it's hard to tell but a weak spark is not gonna fire in a cylinder under compression. Right after a start attempt pull some plugs. Are they wet with fuel? If so then it's probably the weak spark. Pull the coil wire from the dist and insert a spark plug. Make sure it's grounded, crank the motor and see what you have. To me a weak spark will have no color and be virtually invisible in light. A good spark will fat and sorta blue. I don't have a wiring diag or the Syclone supplement here. but you should probably check somewhere that the coil is getting 12 volts. The module or less likely the coil just may have decided to fail at this time.

Best I can come up with right now.:dunno:

Re: no start

Please describe tach bounce.

Since my battery is on it's last leg, I decided to try and jump start my Typhoon with my F 350 diesel truck. My truck has two large hi cranking batteries and a much larger producing altenator.

So, I jump the typhoon and I notice my tach is bouncing around 0-100, maybe 200 rpms while I'm starting it up. I then disconnect the jumper cables. I now try and start my Ty. The tach intially does not move, then it starts bouncing in the save area..100-200 rpms. Is this enough jump to start thinking of an ignition module???

Thanks again everyone

Re: no start

Don,

The spark plug method you describe is how I looked for the spark on my Ty. Spark looked weak, yellow white and not fat.

As far as ignition module, I now am seeing intermitent bounce in the 0-200 rpm range while she' is turning over?????

This is a "rule-of-thumb" but apparently reliable indicator that the ign module is working. Pull and check the plugs like I said but in the end I think you're gonna have to track down the weak spark.

Re: no start

I wish I did not work tomorrow. I'll be on this Saturday when I get home. From what I understand about tach bounce, it should not move at all and if it does, that is an indicator of a bad ignition module???

Open for ideas here :)

Re: no start

My Ty's tach bounces.... When I start it....I'll video it if you want me to..and it bounces 100-200rpm....send me your number or snap chat if you've got that.lmk

Re: no start

Dave,

Thanks for chimin in :D

I checked fuses under the dash. All are good.

Key on Engine off = Service Engine light is on. Now, the Red Check Gauges light in the lower left corner is flashing on and off. I never noticed this before.

I found this on the red gauges light http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66817&highlight=check+gauges but there was no resolution to the problem....

After I read this thread, I went out and checked my coil. I put a spark plug to the coil wire and grounded it to the intake. I do have spark from the coil and the spark looks more frequent than from a single plug wire...I figured the spark would be more evident from the coil....what next?

Re: no start

I have not tired the starter fluid into the intake yet. Went to bed last night...on my way to work today. I"m gonna check the plugs and work from there on Saturday when I get home.

I"m just perplexed as the truck has never had a problem starting. Yet, the last time I started the truck was September.

Re: no start

yeah just because you have fuel pressure doesn't mean you have fuel delivery- buy a cheap noid light for the injector to see if the ecm is actually commanding the injectors to open

how are you testing spark? the best way is with a spark tester where you set a cap on a guage and can see if it jumps the gap- the gap is much larger than a spark plug so it simulates it being under compression.

Re: no start

Can you guys help me remember how to test my fuel psi regulator. Don't I have to put vacuum to the regulator & if it does not hold vacuum, then the diaphragm is leaking. Correct? I know that I can smell for fuel but I forgot the correct
Procedure to see if the fpr is bad or not.

Re: no start

A fuel pressure regulator will hardly ever cause a no start. But if it makes you feel better pull the vacume line off... make sure it isnt wet with fuel... hook a vacume hand pump up to the regulator and make sure it holds around 20" of vacume without leaking down

Ive never seen a regulator cause a no start... they will just usualy run shitty

Re: no start

I just pulled the drivers side plugs. All were black. I cleand them up, verified that I have spark. I have spark. Hooked up my fuel pressure gauge. Key On Engine Off = 45psi and then I heard the fuel pump turn off. My pressure dropped as soon as the fuel pump turned off. PSI went from 45 to 0 in 30 seconds. While cranking, fuel psi is at a constant 45 psi. Is my fuel pressure regulator bad? I applied Vaccum to it and it held @ 25 with no loss of vaccum.

Re: no start

did you read any of the stuff daveP said?

if your fuel regulator holds vacume then its fine. if your sure your spark is good and you have verified fuel pressure your either missing timing or injector pulse. they have cheap noid lights at auto part stores- go get one- plug it in in plave of the injector and crank it to see if it lights up- if it lights up your ecm is commanding the injectors to open so that would lead me back to a timing issue-

the fact that you had your transmission out then this all happened is whats weird. sometimes its just a complete coincidence that something fails while something else is apart- but dave gave you ideas of what could be the common issue between a trans removal and a no start.
