Re: Syclone Misfiring

There are two notches on the balancer. I can never recall which one you need butnit very much sounds like you set your timing to the incorrect one. LMGTFY...

Re: Syclone Misfiring

It's the second notch. The first is 90* before the second. I have a dampener in front of me, will post a pic later. I doubt it would even run if timing was attempted on that mark.

Re: Syclone Misfiring

Just remembered something that was causing a rough idle in an s10 4.3 I had. From what I have read and heard...it can also cause a misfire if faulty. Engine Coolant sensor. Located in the front-top of manifold. This sensor is connected to ECU...so something to consider.:2cents:

Re: Syclone Misfiring

Here's a front dampener. The notch at the top is the "correct" one, just to the left of the paint mark. The wrong notch is 90* to the right or at 3:00. Sharp eyes might notice that the keyway and the mark do not line up. The keyway follows #1 crank throw but the mark is offset a bit because of the location of the timing tab. Also note the empty (but 2) holes. These are filled as necessary by the factory during run-in as a final balance.

Re: Syclone Misfiring

OK, so I have replaced the distributor with a brand new duralast gold, which cam with the ICM, cap, and rotor already installed. (This was an absolute NIGHTMARE. I seriously might have nightmares about that hold down bolt) i also set the timi g to zero (large notch on tab on drivers side WITH the tan wire unplugged)
And now the truck is running alot worse. It cuts out on power under light throttle, and I have to double foot it because it might die. I've also got a check engine light now, with just a code 42. This code 42 is definitely my problem. I shouldn't have been ignoring it. I'm wondering if it's bad wiring, because I had to Unplug and plug in the ICM, and move wires around back there. Tomorrow I'm going to diagnose the code 42, because i believe this is the problem.

Go to the junk yard and grab one off of any s10 or s10 blazer. I had the same troubles with mine. I extended the wire a bit when I replaced the plug. The wiring on these trucks makes no sense. The way the grounds are routed is stupid. I reran most of the wiring including all the grounds to a central point.

Re: Syclone Misfiring

Ok, so I've replaced the ICM connector, and SO FAR, the truck is running very well. The code 42 is gone, and has yet to come back. I believe I have fixed the problem l, but I can't confirm this yet, as I have not driven it enough. I'll get a good amount of miles on it today and report back. The code may come back, and it may start running like crap again.
Speaking of codes, I do have a code 15 now: Coolant temperature sensor or circuit/ low temperature indicated - Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature colder than -36. I'll check that out today. And I have yet to check the balancer, but I will get to that too.

Yepp I got back to you on that email.
Sorry for the inactivity lately, needed some time off on this thing as I was starting to get pretty frustrated. I'm going to jump back on it this weekend start workingon it more. I believe there is a wiring issue behind the intake, so I think I'm going to pull the intake off, and pull out that part of the harness to check all of the wires.

Any updates on that wiring behind the intake? Or on the truck for that matter?

I ran new wires from the ecm (Tan/White & White wires), to the ICM, and that completely fixed the code 42 problem. The code has never come back. But the truck Still misfires. I have no idea what is wrong with it. I had it at a shop a few weeks ago, and he replace a coolant temperature sensor, which had failed, which he said was causing the truck to run rich. He also said the code 42 is likely causing the misfire. But I fixed that, and it made no difference. Sometimes the truck runs great and usually it doesn't. Sometimes when I'm driving it up a grade, it will barely be able to hold the speed limit. I'm not really sure what I should do next. This thing is a dog right now

Man.. well that really sucks! I feel fortunate that something like this has not happen to my syty, but I will say that I've owned my share of s10/15's and this F-ing code 42 has really been a deal breaker. I sold my last s10 blazer because I could not get rid of the misfire. I did a new wire like you did, new sensors in the hole truck, new dis, ..I mean you name it, I put it new. Still could not figure it out. Sold, told that guy "you figure it out" lol. So yeah I was really hoping to hear the good news that you figured it out. Don't give up, I'm cheering for you man:tup:

Well I got my car all done, so now I'm completely tearing into the truck and dealing with everything. I've got the whole wiring harness out right now and I'm slowly making my way through it, fixing any crap splices, and replacing any bad wires. That's just part of it. I'll get back with pictures and more info this weekend. I can tear into it as far as I need now since I don't have to drive it now.
