SYTY will not idle.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

Mods mostly came in boxes in the back of the typhoon with it..

Turbonetics T3/4 turbo
turbotweak chip with 60lb injectors from eric.
adjustable fpr
Performance products 58mm TB with typhoon linkage on it
Motor is built with forged pistons and different cam.
roller rockers
oversize exhaust and intake vales,
*I did not have engine built I only did the headgaskets and assembled the top end after someone had overheated the motor*

Yes the gauge is IN HG I apologize for the typo. and it is around 9 to 10. I have timed it 3 times referencing rockers and compression coming out of spark plug one cyl hole. with the brown connector undone. harmonic balancer ring has not slipped.

The chip stock in the typhoon did have a ATR sticker on it, but from my understanding the syty chip setup only uses the stock for knock signal.

thank you again for all of your ideas.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

I am also buying the stuff to log it and will have a log up soon.

as for throttle tuning with the throttle blade at 20 it wont run. at all.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

Your method of timing doesn't mention using a timing light. That's the only way to get it right. Using rockers is good but only gets you close. But then you mention the damper hasn't slipped so I guess you are using a light?

If you're buying stuff to log with how are you measuring "throttle at 20?" 20 what?

Do you have Velosyty Chip instructions? Here's the link:

I think he is talking about adjust the throttle body minimum air stop to lower the IAC counts.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

I'm just confused as usual. He says he's buying stuff to log with so how is he measuring IAC counts? 'sides 20 is to low anyway. IMHO if 20 = almost closed, which I think it does, and the throttle butterflies are closed then there is a vac somewhere. Hard to say for sure though.

Question for v12powers: As you let up what RPM does it quit running?

Re: SYTY will not idle.

Yes i an using an actron digital timing light. Sorry that i did. Not specify. As for the 20... i am referencing the iac counts that my scantool (otc SPX obd1 scanner).

The chip says my iac counts should be arround 20 to 30. My typhoon will not even run with the throttle plate tuned like that. I know its supposed to be. So somethings wrong.

Rpm is about 2500 to 3000 rpm.. for instance i can be on the freeway, floor it... my wwideband goes rich to 10.0 and stays... then arround 7 psi it starts to bog and not make any power. So i have to let off the throttle.

I am buying a usb to obd1 cable and then purchasing a program suggested by eric to log it. Should have it soon. Thank you all again.

What is your Fuel Pressure when this happens?

Re: SYTY will not idle.

I read the mods, but are you still running the stock style air intake over the radiator, and the stock intake to turbo hose? If you still have that stock to turbo hose...throw it in the trash. I was not able to drive mine more than 30 as the material inside pulled away from the hose and caused an air restriction.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

OK, understand on the "20."

Random thoughts:

You said early on the throttle is closed based on your smoke test. That being said you should have seen some smoke because of back flow through the IAC. (Unless it closes with key off which I don’t think it does.) It’s a stretch but you might take the TB apart and make sure the gaskets aren’t broken/missing or whatever.

When it bogs at 7# boost what does the WB do?

On a different post you said that the IAC count goes to 49 to 60 (Post # 9) this would indicate the throttle blades ARE closing.

Are cyl heads stock or?

Just to confirm was the chip calibrated for 60# injs as well as a 3 bar MAP?

WB to 10 as you floor-it may not be bad but it should come off of that, towards 11, quickly.

Here’s a crazy idea. Take the IC off, leave the hose on the TB and plug it completely (or just seal the intake completely with -something-) then see if it runs. If it does then there has to be a vac leak somewhere.

For a data logger what do you have coming? If Data Master I think it can be downloaded and you get some free logs before you have to register.

Anyway, keep us posted.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

To me it sounds like you simply have one cylinder down (bad wire, plug boot, etc.). These things will sound almost normal at an idle with one cylinder down but will run pig rich. I'd pull each plug wire and check to see if one is down.
BTW - I discovered this myself right after I bought my Sy and had exactly the same symptoms. :)

fuel pressure raises at the same rate as the boost so around 45 to 46psi I can watch the FPR doing what it is supposed to.

I am aware that this I not the best thing to do. But I am trying to get it to run right so for right now, It is open from the turbo inlet.. No intake pipe or filter. I know this is not the best... but It did not come with any of it anyway. and how the turbo fits I will have to TIG an intake up for it. your idea was a good suggestion though.

When I did the smoke test I completely loosened up the throttle adjustment screw. so that it would be sealed (to keep pressure in so that the smoke would go through everything else and show a leak if I have one) I have to have the screw adjusted so that the IAC reads 49 to 60 for it to run. otherwise it will die.

cylinder heads are stock casting but whoever built the motor before me did a valve job with oversize valves exhaust and intake.

TB is new and so are gaskets. I have pulled it twice to make sure that it is all sealed.

I just bought a generic usb to OBD1 adapter, and will be using Tuner Pro RT (what eric suggested) to log.

I ordered the chip and injectors and 3 bar map from eric. he has always sent me the right tune. but who knows. anything is possible. chip build sheet was correct.

One cylinder is at 120 psi I haven't checked the others yet. I think that's maybe 30 lower than it should be you might be on to the problem. I was going to build a motor for it anyway. but I might have to sooner

A quick way to test the motor for piston/ring damage is to pull the oil fill cap with the motor running and see if air or smoke is pushing out.

Re: SYTY will not idle.

OK, good Just checking on the injs. One never knows but if the whole works came from Eric I wouldn't be concerned.

I agree with WyoSyclone. I went to a set of race wires on my truck and it just transformed the thing. I was amazed. I could tell the moment I started it. No doubt it will help but there might be more to this idle issue.

"fuel pressure raises at the same rate as the boost so around 45 to 46psi I can watch the FPR doing what it is supposed to"

46 psi fuel pres. is only about 3-4 lbs of boost. What is the wide band doing all this time? What's the WB say when it quits at 7 psi boost?

Example. My truck at 20# boost is making close to 65# fuel pres.

The wideband is pegged at 10.0 the whole time. never raises until I let off the throttle completely.

I bought the Taylor wires from RPM and an msd cap and rotor. running stock NGK plugs From RPM as well. It could be a compression problem though..... Probably check compression on the other cylinders tonight.

I meant more in the terms of just a bad plug or plug wire. I would certainly check this before spending a bunch of time on other things.

I didn't notice a lot of crank case pressure or smoke but I will pull it tonight and see.
