Transmission Fluid Temperatures

What kind of fluid temps are people seeing?

What would be considered a "high limit"

Any information anyone has is appreciated.

I wanna say when I was riding in Jeff's last year I remember seeing somewhere in the 140's, but then again I was in the passenger seat, and he was drivng WAY too fast for me to pay too much attention to a gauge instead of the fastly approaching traffic :D :D

Cruise with TC locked with outside temps ~95 deg: ~165 deg
Stop and go traffic with ac on, ~95 deg outside temps: ~175-180
15lb launch, 11.9x pass, locking the TC at 2nd gear shift, ~95 deg outside temps: ~195-205 by the time I got back to my pit.

Trans or temp related mods for me are:
160 deg T stat.
3k 9/11.
28k GVW B&M cooler mounted behind the grill in series with the stock in radiator cooler.
PR valve grinding mod.
TV cable adjusted slightly tighter than stock (one or two clicks).
Red Line "high temp" synth ATF.
TCI cast aluminum trans pan.
No TC cover installed.
Digital temp gauge sending unit mounted in fluid out (hot) line ~5" from trans.

Im going by memory so the above temps are prolly +/- 5 deg cept for the cruise temp. My cruise temps stay about 5 deg above the T stat rating.

Well when I had the stock tranny in there.. it was sitting around 180-200.. now I have the built one in there and yesterday just driving around town it got up as high as 240... :(

So I am not sure if I have to move the cooler or what.. I am concerned that there is an issue with the converter.

I have a Stage VII HHP tranny that I built, 3k stall 9/11, cooler on the frame rail under the truck.. I am just wondering if that is just not going to work for the cooler... maybe I will just move it and see.

My first tranny.. shifts great.. everything related to the tranny seems fine.. just cannot decide why there is so much heat being generated. No odd noise or anything.. drived fine.. drove it to work this morning.. by the time I got here it was 190 and it was 60 outside... just cruising... hmm.. more thinking.

How big is the cooler and does it have a fan on it? If it is under the truck it will need to have a fan on it.

Pull the pan and check the filter and also check for any other possible restrictions in the cooler line.
The last truck I saw with those kind of temps--It's tranny didn't live long.
The cause? Nearly clogged filter because the converter had a internal problem.

Yeah to cooler is about 18" x 7" and is under the truck.. has a 400CFM fan on it.

I hate to pull the freakin pan.. I guess that is what I will have to do.. I know the tranny would not live long... as soon as I saw the temps going up I drove it home. I will check the filter, etc... hate to take the pan off... at least I have a drain on there...

I am afraid my 9/11 crapped... but there is only about 1000 miles on it.

Oh well.. up on stands and off comes the pan.

With that size cooler/fan and OAT something is definitly wrong.

Any pics of your cooler install?

Come on Nick, get some motivation!! I know exactly how you feel on this subject... I think at times we all want to forget about her for a while. I haven't talked to my Sy since 'it' started knocking.

I can take some pics of the cooler .. when I am under there. Drove it after work again today.. same thing.. tranny temp just climbs... parked it.. off the pan comes.

Later.

Hey Nick,

Did you have the same convertor in the stock tranny? High stalls make a bunch of heat unless they are locked.

I can't quote you any temps from my truck, no temp gauge. I figured I'd rather be ignorant than worried.

No, Purposely left it out of the stock tranny.. because I was worried I would frag the stock one...

It is so odd.. because it shifts perfectly... it drives perfectly.. you can feel it lock up fine, etc.

I checked the fan and it is operating... I have the summit Aux filter installed too.. so I will check that first and see if there is any metal or particles in it. I will not be happy if I have to pull this converter our.. I am hoping it is an issue with location of the cooler... the stock one seemed to run a bit hotter that I would expect.. so if I don't see metal.. then I will try moving the cooler.

I don't have the radiator in sequence either... no cooler circuit in the radiator I am using.. but I think that may change.

Do you have the lines connected properly to the aux trans filter? I know one member had the lines on backwards and was getting "china syndrome" temperatures just driving around  . I never saw temperatures over 200 degrees the last time my truck was on the road. I have my gauges set up to flash a warning light if they exceed 220 degrees.

My set up is: pressure line out of trans>Summit aux filter (this is where temp sender is)>radiator>28,000 GVW B&M cooler in front of radiator on passenger side>back to trans. HTH's

Well, im assuming that your sensor is inline with the "hot" line on the trans, and not welded in the pan itself??

So with that in mind, you want to see between 140ºF and 190ºF. On a brake torque, try not to go over 210ºF, I was told by Hartman a while back, so im thinking 240ºF is or may have already done some sort of damage to the trans IF the gauge is infact accurate.

I will check the lines.. I installed them recently and I am pretty sure they are all in the right place.

I don't have a "gage".. I have a 4L60E in the truck.. so the transmission computer is where the temperature is coming from... I am of course assuming that it is correct... I guess the other thing I can do it put a mechanical gage on it also.. just to double check.

I have another 4L60E so if the mechanical gage does not match the other gage then I can swap modules also.

I will check the lines though.. that would be a good place to start.. and pull the summit filter and make sure the lines are installed correctly, etc.

I was thinking 180 would about a good limit.. just the other tranny I had in there would get hot too.. so I am thinking the cooler is not gettng enough air.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

I have a 9/11 2800 (closer to a 3000), with an external cooler mounted where the spare tire used to be under the bed and a 10" puller fan. Temps have never gone over 200 coming out of the trans to the cooler. Driving around town on a hot summer day, or after making an 1/8 mile pass typical temps are around 180. Cooler days (65-75 deg.) temps stay around 160-170 deg. I deleted the front cooler from the circuit and it seemed to help keep the trans cooler especially on those really hot days when the 160 deg. engine t-stat turns into a 180.

Nick,

I'd say install a temp gauge into the hot line just for a double check. If it's showing the same, check the routing of the lines and relocate the cooler.

My tranny temps, measured in the hot line, are in the 140-150F range, driving around. Power braking or in a very bad traffic jam in hot weather it's going up to the 170-180F range, but I've never seen anything higher than this.

BTW, I've read somewhere that the real problems will start around 250-180F. I might try to dig up that article...

Good luck,

Judging by the fact it still shifts fine, etc.. I am thinking that I did not do any damage.. I am leaning toward some sort of cooler or line installation error as some have suggested. Just seems like everything is working fine.

I already have a place to install the gage, the gage, sender, etc.. so I might as well install it as a double check.

I hope to do that this weekend.

Yesteday Hartman and I put in my Stage V and a new billett converter. I am very pleased and impressed with it. It shifts really hard and I have plenty of stall 3300 or so. I have a spa temp gauge and I want to put it in the hot line. How did you guys do it. Is there a speacial fitting that you used or external filter housing. My old tranny temps were 160-195 they did get over 200 when I was beating the shit out of it.

race or get outta the way
this setup keeps the tranz temp well under 160 all the time on my B&M gauge.

external trans filter mounted on outside pass frame frail just in front of front rear spring mount. Tranny Temp sending unit also here. The adapter has a port for the sending unit.

As for how to keep it cool. Heres what happens when you get tired of losing tranny's, might be soome overkill in this but i will never lose a tranny to heat:
