Transmission is out today, finally!

Took me about 2 1/2 days because I had a couple of stripped bolts and other crap to deal with. Transmission weights about 150lbs. Me too. Transfer case another 75lbs. That was the easy part. Ugh!

I like it tite but this is ridiculous,

I'll be getting it ready to install next Saturday. Hopefully, I can at least hang it all in place. Lost about 6-8oz of transfer case fluid. New torque converter and rebuilt syty trans going in soon! Oil is everywhere under there! Gonna leave it since floor panels are rust free. Or ??

Old one

Off the top of my noggin...didn't document until now.
Truck has : tires, water pump, gave it a fresh tune up, 42# ink and TT chip for 91 octane, rebuilt turbo, rebuilt transmission, New mini starter, New torque converter, rebuilding prop shaft, New rear shocks, air foil, AFPR, alternator, aldl cable.

I need to stop throwing $$$ @ this pos and work on my other project.

Re: Transmission is out today, finally!

Let me know if y'all need a pic of a specific place/part under there while it's all out. Gonna try to take good pics of the motor mounts since I have devised an add-on for them. Can't say what it is. Have to install and run it to see results. Then, might see about offering them to one of the vendors here and there.

Took transmission out for replacement with a rebuilt one but.. Since then, I have had to replace...
1. Radiator(New)
2. Distributor(New)
3. Mini starter(New)
4. Turbo(rebuilt with 20g wheel)
5. Prop shaft(rebuilt bravada style) heavy duty
6. Water pump(New)
7. Rerouted rubber only water hoses(1 heater hose, 2 intercooler hoses)

And the list keeps growing...

1. Rear suspension(return to stock)
2 . Repaint(later) might paint cladding too
3. Safety loops
4. ABS delete
5. Reroute cold air intake

I'll have to keep this thing after doing all this to it. I'll never get half my money back. I'll set it on fire before I die so it doesn't cost anybody else grief.

What torque converter did you go with? Stall etc. Price...?

Re: Transmission is out today, finally!

Rebuild is for durability and up to 450hp. Didn't want neck snapping shifts at full pressure all the time. Truck has some better than stock bolt ons. New torque converter was built to syty specs using the old one as reference as per builder but using better internals. Transmission built by Phoenix Transmission as well. Came with 3 year/50k mile warranty. Being sitting for 6 months :(.
This truck needed TCL in a big way. It sucks that it has to be me doing it. I was hoping to just enjoy driving it. I know better now.

Never heard of them. Translation: I wouldn't be surprised if that trans dies in the first few thousand miles. Not trying to be a downer, just telling you what I've seen and experienced.

Tran-case

Don't forget to install the missing bolt in the pic. Based on the goop showing between the case half's the T-case has been worked on. (Just an observation) There IS a gasket between the t-case and trans in case you're wondering.

You are correct sir. I believe the previous owner installed another transfer case so this isn't the original one. What is the purpose of the missing bolt? I drove it like that until the transmission went out. No leaks except for water pump and oil pan plug.

Does anybody have pics of front shaft loop(s) installed?

I think I'm going to install a transmission drain plug while it's out. I am going to install it on the back of the pan not the bottom. Don't want it hitting speed bump or something.

That bolt does both keep that bracket attached and hold the case together at that point. IF you have the brace that goes between that bracket and the bell housing I have a hint for you. Being somewhat anal about such thing I would do the following: Once trans is in and tight (except the brace bolt) install the brace by starting but not tightening the bolts on this bracket. Then tighten the brace bolt into the bell housing. Only then do you you tighten the bolts at the bracket. Reason? If you do it in the reverse you could very easily be applying a strain on that brace and, in turn, the t-case. IE pulling it toward the bell housing. Something you don't want IMHO.

Re: Transmission is out today, finally!

so who do you suggest for a rebuild tranny?

Is this question directed to me? If so, I suggest that it gets rebuilt by someone familiar with them. I wouldn't tackle a job this big on my own without guidance. A lot of 4l60-E parts fit internally. Mainly, the clutches and steels. While those can be had from aftermarket resources for racing purposes, I would stick to GM parts for the long haul(mile after mile). I would personally not consider 8-9 clutch disc packs for " more holding power" because it means less material(thinner) must be crammed in there leading to faster wear of the frictions. That's my opinion. The governor stays unchanged, just rebuilt. Stall converter could use not pressure so check valve can be left out. Servos- corvette stuff are fine because anything bigger can be too much. They can drill the valve body for no TV cable but I left that alone. Boost valve no bigger than .5- I think syty .430 or close. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Above all, the install must be CLEAN of dust, dirt, shavings etc. I am sure I am leaving other stuff out but this would give you a good idea. Please know I am not a.certified mechanic and only have listed stuff out the top of my head. Tentatively, you want to pay someone reputable to do the work. It a pain! In the end you will get back a running truck and warranty-piece of mind. Good luck sir.

Re: Transmission is out today, finally!

I hate to say it myself but more than likely trans will die within days or maybe weeks...

Re: Transmission is out today, finally!

Only one way to find out if this transmission is going to survive the power of a mere 400hp at the crank. Tomorrow, I hope to have most stuff in place. I noticed the distributor need to be replaced. It's a rusty son-of-a-gun. I am replacing the starter with the 454 unit which is smaller and has more than plenty of torque for the 4.3L from what I have read.

What an asinine remark. How can you say that? What do you base that on? You don't know a damn thing about what went in it, how it was built, what was wrong with it to cause it to need attention, nor the qualifications or the experience of the guy that built it. I presume the remark is based on your opinion that a transmission intended for use in a SyTy isn't going to be reliable if it isn't built by a certain individual you think very highly of. My opinion differs. There are thousands of guys capable of building a SyTy transmission.

I don't understand the "prediction" you made regarding this guy's trans. You have no basis whatsoever for the remark. :screwy:

Code what?
Transmission is out today, finally!

I believe his comment was directed towards the 700r4 in general. Many people here believe the trans is junk, it has it's issues although there is a fix for all of them. Most people here abuse there stock trans more than what any trans would take. Racing will abuse any trans, the overheating of fluid and lack of fluid changes is what is contributing to unexpected failures for the haters of the 700r4.

I have broken two syty 700's and have had the privilege of tearing down each one to see the cause. First was a failure of a cheap restalled TC, second was a 146k mile raced to hell stock trans breaking a sprag.

I've seen more stupid mistakes tearing down 700r4's and 4l60's that it's stupid people spend that much effort and miss something resulting in premature wear ending in failure. Of course those blame the trans and not the builder, mostly based on getting 30k out of a trans that should have lasted well into 100k if it was built right.

Two most commonly overlooked mistakes are bushing wear/replacement and modification parts not being installed properly. Good example is the "beast" sunshell upgrade. I've seen two trans failures due to this, the upgraded sunshell requires modification to the low reverse roller clutch to not send metal shavings through your freshly rebuilt trans overtime. I've removed two unmodified low reverse clutches from rebuilt syty transmissions using the beast. The wear was obvious after looking at the parts. One transmission was built by a individual here that has had people talk about him as if he is a syty god. From what I've seen his work quality is poor and takes more pride excepting people's money for shit work.

Do me a favor... Keep your comment's and dumb remarks to yourself when it comes to responding to anything I post. You always think you have the answers for everything and everyone else is wrong or does not know what they are talking about. Just about every time someone that has a trans rebuilt from someone other than maybe four known builders they break or need to be pulled out several times. I suppose you want to argue that fact as it is well known.... Thousands of guys??? I don't think anyone could name ten. Not being negative here just making a point. Austin mentioned the same thing...

Ouch! I touched it up a bit...

Step by step, up it went. Had to. It was me, myself and I

Up on the jack and into it's place. Started buttoning it all up. Yes, that a plastic bag keep the tail nice and dust free until the transfer case is bolted and sealed in place as well.
