Truck Problem

Trying to get my truck going ... problems start with the starter and flywheel. Try to start and it sounds like either I am missing teeth on the flywheel, truck will crank than it sounds like it hits a flat spot on my flywheel and grinding and metallic noises. I am not sure if it is the bendix gear either on the starter or what. (everytime I try to work on this, Its always something else)

Symptom, Go to start truck engine rotates around to almost all the way and than it sounds horrible gives out does not start truck and keeps Not engaging.

I tried to test my truck yesterday night with a few basic things. Purchased a new fuel gauge to set the trucks fuel pressure. Funny thing is when I was slightly able to drive it around the block the truck did run and the fuel pressure was at 20 psi. I jumped it up to 40 and it would not even move Spittin, sputterin, turbo sound like it was spoolin at 1500 rpm..

Being that the truck does not RUN correct with the current chip/tune in it, I can barely do basic tests even in my development. Truck runs so rich I cant figure it out. I tried to monitor a the FP as I was driving and the truck died on me again in the middle of the road. and started the flywheel starter crap.

Just sucks when it does this. Im not sure what to even do, I would like to move the truck to my shop but the truck "dont run right" I tried to move it sunday and it did the same shit, ran so rich it must of flooded its self out or choked out and played the starter game with me for a hour.

Re: Truck Problem

Have you changed the flywheel or starter on your typhoon?

What do you have for heads, cam, injectors and tuning equipment?

Re: Truck Problem

Do you have TP or DM? You said that you are running rich & that you are having a hard time keeping it running. What was your last mod? Do you have a wideband AFR? I would suggest checking for vacuum leaks, Check the timing, check the TPS. But not before you fix your starter problem.

Your starter problem sounds like the starter is not ingaging/disengaging. Im making a guess that it only makes this sound when the starter is worm from cranking. Is it a new starter? Is it shimmed? When you pull your starter out, Check all the teeth on the flywheel. I found this best to do with two people.

Re: Truck Problem

Is your fuel pressure with vacuum disconnected? Vacuum line should be off and I suspect I was on because I doubt it would even fire with 20 base fuel pressure. I don't know exactly what hood burns his chips for but If he use the starter code59 60bin its set for ~43psi base fuel pressure.

Is your chip burned for 60# injectors?

Re: Truck Problem

Vac line was disconnected th\e 2nd time around when I re-adjusted it to 40 psi disconnected.

I had installed the gauge cold last night and had truck running at 20psi fuel pressure off the bat. As soon as I started to up the PSI the truck would not want to want to run and would smell like unburnt fuel or a loaded up cylinders.

Chip is for the current build. Havent changed anything since except the sensors I thought were bad creating a flood condition.

I know I need a tune. My main issue is - I thought the chip would allow me to drive the truck. "get me close" or atleast "get me started"

Really it would be great to get my truck out of where it is but the thing keeps dieing and breaking down on me it is very discouraging. When I cant even go down the road with out it messing up it gets very tiring and old quick.

Quick video of me just attempting to start truck, Fuel pressure is low Its at like 30 with hose on so Around 20 with off I am guessing. Truck did do the starter thing. Took a few times to start. Noise can be heard with volume up. As far as I know its the original starter. I put it back in. No shims that I am aware of.http://s1206.photobucket.com/user/slyclone00/media/102_0044-1_zps512cb9d2.mp4.html

2nd video was hose off, fuel pressure adjusted to 43psi, dropped to around 36-38psi hose on 10.0-11 af and acts up

Re: Truck Problem

I know how you feel. Hang in there.

What injectors have you got? Have you got code59? Did you try adjusting your F28 table to get the tune a bit closer?

You seem to have a few snags - that sucks but when it all works, you'll feel so great.

Re: Truck Problem

Is your intial timing set properly? The 43psi of fuel pressure should be about 32-33 (18-20" of vacuum) at idle. If you have low vacuum at idle you may have an intake vacuum leak. 38psi with 43psi base would indicate ~10" of hg.

Re: Truck Problem

I have been under the truck for the past hour and under the hood. I am seeing nasty PCV area. The hose looks oil soaked. OEM stuff off TB to the 1st bend is like oil saturated. dripping. Oil is seeping from some where or escaping some how. And to be honest it looks like the oil could have penetrated the injector directly below the PCV valve. Looks like a slow drip. Could have very well fouled the cylinder out completely or it is just a dead cylinder?

The Vac issue- I was running a small baseball sized GM canister I found off a junk yard blazr. I put my truck together and that was all that was missing was the original vac ball. It flew off during the transport I believe. Since than I have used a smaller looking style vac ball. The Vac ball actually broke the other day and I have since put a new Larger ball on and have noticed 10 HG on the gauge, where I was pulling 18-20 before. Your saying look over the vac system real close? A intake leak is possible with that type of reading?

Re: Truck Problem

I was under the hood yesterday and find a lot of stuff I wish I had not seen. For starts almost every single oil pan bolt was loose. I took my inspection plate off the trans and the inside was oil coated. I notice a small drip but again no way to actuall pin-point.

I tested OHM on the injectors on my driver side and all checked out with a 12.5 reading. The one that I thought was bad, oil by the PCV injector 6 I tested and was 11.8. I think that injector is done. Is 11.8 ohm a low reading? Low enough to cause rich conditions and other issues like smoking and sputtering.? Starting my truck up is like siting in the pits of the top fuel cars and what not- The fuel just burns your eyes.

I tightened most of the hardware under the hood. The valve covers appeared to be loose, the intake manifold hardware took some torquing. 2 lower throttle body hardwares were loose. Did not make it run any better.

Is replacing 1 injector worth my time or do I do all 6 again?

Pull the oil dipstick and see if it smells like gas,If it does, replace FPR and change oil.

If it doesn't pull oil fill cap with engine running.Rev it up a couple times. If you see white smoke your engine is toast.

Re: Truck Problem

IIRC you recently had the motor rebuilt.

It sounds like you have your hands full. Did the person who installed your motor the same one who rebuilt it? If so i would be very skeptical of the rebuild as well. Anyways I would try to verify everything I could. It maybe tedious now but it could save you if and when any other problems pop up. Sometimes these trucks are hard enough to diagnose when unmolested Adding in shoddy installation is going to significantly up the Degree of difficultly.

If the intake wasn't properly torqued, it very well may have an internal vacuum leak. I would pull the intake and replace he gaskets. Check the grounds at the back of the heads, check the head bolt torque, plugs, spark plug routing, check the ground at the front driver intake bolt, check for the correct Pcv valves, ect.

Re: Truck Problem

When your truck runs, can you see a fuel leak underneath the truck? Check the rail isn't leaking as well, especially the connection to the rail/AFPR area. Fuel in the cabin is not healthy.

Sorry you found all these issues.

Can you do a compression test as well?

I would also think about disconnecting the injector harness one at a time to see if that helps your rich condition. It won't idle as well as a a perfect truck but might be better than what you have now and show you where your rich condition is coming from.

Have you got the WBO2 working ok?
