Turbocharging a non-SyTy 4.3

Let's assume a TBI 4.3 in an early '90s s-series truck.
I have the SyTy headers, turbo, and exhaust piping, but
obviously the SyTy has a different intake. Can a SyTy
be swapped in place of a TBI with minimal effort, or is it
actually more of a chore than its worth?

look in the conversion area, several people have done it, the cpi setup isn't very turbo friendly. the tbi intake bolt pattern is the same i believe but in my opinon i'd consider just keeping the tbi intake and using it.

The manifold swap is fine... it's the fuel system, injectors and computer stuff that's gonna cause you more issues.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

Re: Turbocharging a non-SyTy 4.3

tuning the TBI can be tricky. only having two injectors is very limiting. my truck started as a supercharged 94 TBI and i ended up swapping to a 2114 MPFI setup when i went turbo and it was the best mod i ever did

if your power goals are moddest, the TBI will work

if your goals are a little more wild, like 300+whp, i would ditch the TBI

BTW a stock down pipe wont work in a 2wd truck

Per turbodig's statement, how did you handle fueling and electronics?
Was it fairly straight forward, or did you have to jump through hoops?

I would like somemore info on fueling and tuning as well. I have a 91 s10 4.3 TBI that I plan on turboing.

Well, looking at this from a practical standpoint....

Intake, used - $450 (average going rate)
Fuel rail,used - $100
FPR - $100
Injectors - $350
Wiring harness,used - $150
Exhaust manifolds/ x-over -$300
Custom fuel line - $200 (by the time you get all the fittings, etc.
MAP,knock, o2,temp sensors, etc - $300
Fuel pump (In-tank) $100
Fuel pump wiring - $100
ECM -$100
Chip adapter board -$35
Burner and PROM - $100

You're right at around $2500. Now, there will be people who say "I can get x, cheaper..." and you probably can.

But, this doesn't include -

Turbo
Exhaust plumbing
Intercooler + related
All the time you'll spend piecing this all together, figuring out problems, grafting into your dash, gauges etc.
Paying a tuner, if you don't/can't want to do it yourself.

And, when it's all said and done, your TBI motor isn't really set up for boost. The Sy motors that are built for it don't last particularly long. Not to mention, the transmission you have won't hold up, the sy spec trans wasn't even up to the task.

The second list would cost you at least that $3500 additional, if not more. Again, scroungers can find better deals, but a lot of time you end up with parts that you can't use.

The reality of the SyTy market now is such that for another 1-2k, you could have purchased a SyTy.

There have been many that have been down the conversion road before, and they'll pretty much all tell you the same thing- It would have been waaaay cheaper to buy one.
