what build do you want to see?

yeh i dont think the 3 speed is as bad as everyone thinks as long as you swap the gears. I have considered the 4l80e, and havent completely written it off however keep in mind just a bare core with the electronics, selenoids etc should run around $2-2500. Thats a stock rebuilt core outright. Then add the aftermarket computer to control it, the torque converter, adaptor, new driveshafts, crossmemeber mods etc.

People want to see a budget build, but also want a 4l80e. Those two dont seem to go hand in hand. Fortunately i have some time to think about it and find some cheap parts.

I think that a lot of people on the board here are gettting sick of there 700 and would like to put somthing in that is strong enough to hold up to some real power but still retain there 4th gear.

I guess my truck doesn't make real power

Seriously, a 700 can and will hold up if built correctly, but it isn't cheap. My Rossler built 700 has been in the truck since spring of 03 and has several mid-low 10sec passes on it.

A 400 or 350 is definitely the more sane/economical way to go for bigger horsepower, but it isn't the only way to go.

yeah but that was after les broke the tranny, and you probably havent put very many runs on it, compared to les or myself to see how long it really will last.

and just like we all know.... morgan can break any 700 tranny, just ask him or the peeps at dynotech.... i bet they just about shit when they see morgans number on their caller id. :D

whats several? 2 or 3 passes? I remember Les talking about various problems with the trans, even ones built by Rossler. Nobody ever said it couldnt hold, but why spend so much money and have it be questionable.

For the price of a fully built 700 with all the one off bells and whistles to make it last, you are almost at the price of a 4l80e swap..

I am not saying that some of you arnt puting down some serious numbers with the 700 sill in the truck. The reason i would like to see a 4l80e is it is just like you said, to get a 700 with all the bells you are into it close enough to to do a 4l80 swap. I would just like to see it done and see how well it dose with a good amount of power turning it. Side note: How much dose puting a t400 and 308's affect you launch?

How many people need 10 sec trucks to drive across the country? Put a turbo 400 in it and you will never have to worry about it.

This is why so many want to see the 4l80e swap, my self included. Factor in the price of 2 built 700's and thats enough to cover the 4l80e and any parts for adaption you can think of. I know my trans was rebuilt at some time, and the fastest pull to date(that I'm aware of) was only a 14.2. With how many 700's some people have been through, I think everyone has come to the point where we all have a fund to start saving for a real tranny, and just pray that it has a couple thousand dollars in it when your trans takes a dump, again.

If there's one thing I hate doing more than anything else, its going back in to re-fix problems you didn't do right in the first place. just my :2cents:

Not everyone makes 15 passes on there truck a week either.

Me. But my current 700 build seems to be doing fine. If I had the money, I'd be looking into a 4L80E for the next trans, though.

Just to clear up the facts, Les did break the tranny (the output shaft) on a Rossler built tranny that was built for around 600hp. He had the output shaft fixed, then set that transmission aside. It's now in Tydriver's garage waiting on him to finish his Ty - I sold it to him last year after I bought it from Les. Les then went back to Rossler in the spring/early summer of 03 and told them what he had and they built the tranny that is in it now.

The Rossler tranny that is in it now has NEVER broke. Period. He reused the TC from his old tranny and it blew apart on him, which required the tranny to be freshened in the late summer of 03 and the purchase of a new TC.

2-3 passes Mike? Not quite. When I was with Les and family in Bristol last fall he made at least 10 passes in 2 days. All 10 sec runs. He raced it all last year with this trans. I raced it 5-6 times this year and made dozens of street runs. Shifts just as good as it did last year.

Will it last forever? No. It isn't as strong as a 400, period. I anticipated pulling it this winter and taking it back to Rossler to be freshened. How long would it last in a 11 sec truck? You make the call, I don't know. Just because not everyone can build a 700 like Rossler and not everyone wants to put down the money doesn't mean that it can't be done. As expensive as a 4l80E? I disagree.

Like I said, I would do a 350/400 in the build you are discussing, Mike. It just makes more sense and I wasn't disagreeing with that. Like I said earlier, have fun and good luck with the build. I wish I had your job instead of mine.

Hey Morgan, if we meet I'll give you a ride and we'll see if we can break it together! :D

sounds like alot of freshening. Me personally, i would like to do the trans and not worrying about it being freshened every race season. After all we are talking 10s not 7s.

The 4l80e trans is definately a step in the right direction, but i think it will be simpler, quicker, easier, and more practical for this build to use a 3 speed. We can always upgrade down the road if we feel the need, as can the customer.

let me ask this for people like me who don' t know:

what are the RPM's going to be in a 350/400 going the average feeways speed of 60-75mph?

will those higher RPM's bring more wear and tear to a daily driven truck that is occasionally on the feeway? enough to negate money one would save if it has to be rebuilt because of this constant higher RPM wear?

basically, how pratical is it to use a 350/400 for daily driving on the feeway for those customers who may consider it but may drive their truck more than to the track and back?

TIA

After reading this thread...I'm starting to dig on the TH350 w/ 3.08 gears more and more. In fact it's starting to intrigue me...very much so.

just wondering if the TH350 is lighter than the 700R4.

the first gear is taller so it doesnt hit the tire as hard and want to spin.

yeah like he said... however this just makes it so you can throw the coals at it just that much more... and then you can make it spin ( or break 1 or more axles) :D

i enjoy the debates over the tranny choices here.

i realize most everyone has a 700 and they argue the piss outta the freeway thing.

with the 3.08 gears your under 3k... dont remember the exact number2700-2800? maybe....

the one thing i gotta tell ya that you cant appreciate if you havent done the swap is not having that mental mind screwing everytime you pull to the line wondering if this is the pass that will make it break.

like bob romano said... put it in and you can forget about it.

I fully agree on the 700-4L60 trans ..it is only reliable to high 10 range for any extended running...Everyone that has gone below 10.50' s with them has problems..I think the 400 with the 3.08's is the way to go.Jerry

Blow Me?
Re-gearing sounds like a good idea to me to reduce rpm's and to keep from spinning the tires so easy. I can't launch with more than a couple pounds of boost without spinning so it would be really nice to be able to build a little more and to hold first gear a little longer.

Sounds like most of you just drag our trucks, and cruise on the freeway with them, in that case ditching the overdrive might not be that bad of an idea. Personally, when I'm out in the middle of nowhere I like to cruise around 80-90 and once in a while push it up a bit, and cruise at 120-130 for a while and would prefer to not be spinning 6k to do it so I don't think that I could ever go to a three speed.
