What intercooler pump are you running?

Hey guys,

I have been searching for a cheaper that 150 dollar replace for my johnson. It is on its last leg with me have to mess with the wires at the pump to get it to work.. (Dont ask i dont know why). So I have been looking around and wanted to see what other have found that is working awesome.

I am up for putting a pump somewhere else besides stock location.

How does the Shurflow compare in real life to the johnson pump? Not the specs as the johnson looks good but if its under pressure, the flow rate goes to crap.

I have seen some posts about a GM cobalt pump that is nice but its 200 bucks..

Also have seen a F150 Lightning pump that does the same as ours just bigger for 125 bucks.

:)

Re: What intercooler pump are you running?

If I remember right someone was saying that the Shurflo flowed more than the Johnson. While it sounds like a good thing, it might be circulating the water so quickly that it's not cooling it off. I believe the Johnson flows better than the original Bosch pumps did but not as much as the Shurflo. Maybe some others will post up about some good pumps for less money, I can't think of any right off hand, but I'm sure they are out there.

I think people use this mentality WAY too much. The Shurflo cools very well and lasts a LONG time. I have had two, one on each Ty and never had one single problem.

I used a 12v live well pump for a boat from walmart.... It was cheap and effective if you don't want to shell out big bucks. Had it on the truck running on constant for 2 years with out failure. It was almost a direct replecement, didn't have to mod much to make it work.

You wouldn't happen to have a brand and part# for this pump would you?

It was so long ago when I did I couldn't tell you... If I happen to be in a walmart soon I will look for it. I'm sure it's not the ultimate replacement for a stocker but it was a cheap easy alternative.

Check harbor frieght for a 12v pump... lots of volume, and it works fine.

Can't really go wrong with the shurflo 2088, though. They last a *long* time, and resist airlock issues better.

I use Dayton 12v pump (from grainger) for the cooling system on my racecar. Its a remote mount 12v pump that flows plenty enough to keep 1100hp cooled down. Only $30 or so... There are many cheap alternatives that work.

Re: What intercooler pump are you running?

Thanks for the info,

I was leaning to the Shurflo but will look at the other ones you guys pointed out.

Does anybody budy have a flow sensor rigged up to tell if the pump stops?

Sure, I have one on either side of my head.

I can generally hear my Shurflo pump at a stoplight, especially the hose clamp that vibrates against an idler arm bolt.

I agree with that statement. I've got a Johnson pump now, but have run several Surflo's in the past. Those things make some noise when pumping, that's for sure. I could also feel the difference (I'm pretty sure) if all the water had leaked out and the pump was airbound. The truck just wasn't as responsive.

Re: What intercooler pump are you running?

Been aiming to ask this for quite some time.

If I made a larger heat exchanger (like the size of the AC condensor and placed in that spot) and used it with the original CCHE, could I raise the GPM pushed by the pump? The water would still spend more time in cooling than picking up heat in the intercooler. Or, would it reduce the effectiveness of the IC by sending it through to quickly?

Re: What intercooler pump are you running?

So if it circulates that fast then it won't have time in the IC to heat up either right?

:D

the guys on the GN board did a study on flow and determined that for their setups
with A/W the more flow the better..
there is a link on this board somewhere

This is what I was talking about, probably a waste of money but I wanted to do it. Now I want to see it work.
