What 20G wheel did you get? A 12 bladed stock style?

Who are you having amchine your 8CM turbine housing to fit the larger 20G wheel?
Or is it the 20G non "H" wheel?

The inlet on the exhaust housing will set you free my friend! Look at it for .10,12 or 14 . You want a 10 or a 12 unless u want a new TC OR FORGE wastegate.

It's a stocker 12 blade. The company Is local to me and they rebuild diesels all day long. my buddy works there rebuilding turbos so that's how I'm getting mine done. I just take him the parts. They do almost all the machining in-house. Non H is suppose.
I am going to have to figure out which stall converter I can use. I keep thinking 2400 stall but the 20G is most efficient in the 2600-3000 range. 2500 maybe?
This is based on the 17c 550 cfm vs 20G 640-ish. Plus, the 17c maxes out by 15 psi before heat becomes an issue. 15-16 psi with the 20G should be a walk in the park since it maxes out closer to 20-22 psi. I'm also keeping the stocker 12" stall for the added fluid cooling.

If you pick a 2500 stall, it can vary by +/- 200 depending on torque applied so your 2500 stall may go up to 2700 or higher. Your 2400 would be 2600 etc.

Seeing my friend with his Hughes stall up at 3000 and actually stalling as high as 3500 on a launch makes me very wary of higher stall TCs. I found a website saying that you want the stall to be when the turbo starts to spool. I'd go with the 2400. Be interesting to see what you end up with.

So, that means the stock converter is a 1900 + 200 = 2100. Correct?
I know 2100 stall works well with the 8 cm housing and 2400 stall is best with 12 cm.
I'm almost tempted to go 2200 stall. Will have to do more reading.

Since you only have a larger compressor wheel & still an 8CM turbine housing, the stock TC will work fine.
If you want a little extra on the low end you could got to a 2400 stall, but I would not want anymore than that.

On my stock TC, I have data logged it brake stalling to 3025 RPM @ 19 PSI!
Driving it around normal it flash stalls to 2200RPM. Drives like the stocker it is.

It would also spool enough to be able to spin the tires hard through the 60-ft mark. And beat the crap out of the drivetrain.

Of course, I had it tuned to do this. I also didn't do this with a bone stock converter.
And, there were differences in stock converters... early Sys stalled higher. Later Sys and Tys and the TSB converter stalled lower. A early Sy may get by, a later one or 93 Ty, not so much.

To anyone looking for a stock converter compatible turbo, I would either recommend the Spormachines wheel upgrade, a bearing turbo in the TE-44-ish garrett size, or the equivalent. It's possible some of the exotic billets from Bullseye or Precision could be adequate in a larger size turbo, but I don't know that it's been proven.

A 20g is pretty old in terms of turbo tech. That doesn't mean it doesn't work, it just means you really have to be on your game with your overall system to get good results.

*EDIT* A small exhaust housing on a turbo to make it spool is a crutch. Yes, it will spool, but you'll give up power as the motor can't get rid of the exhaust that it produces. Look at any of the really fast guys- they all have relatively large exhaust housings.

If your were wanting more power from your 20G turbo rebuild & want to still use your 8 CM housing. I would get the turbine wheel clipped as much as possible to let the exhaust breath.

Not sure if there is an 9 bladed stock sized turbine wheel available? That would be a better option than clipping a stock turbine wheel.:2cents:

Jeremy ran 11.9? w/a stock turbo & turbine wheel & 8 CM turbine housing & ran good MPH. What was it,, 112 MPH?

I took a datalog of my Typhoon and posted in a thread called "rpm and converter issue" or something similar.

It shows how the turbo will spool really well with the high rpm but not apply the power to the ground. As soon as you lock up the TC, you can see what your actual desired rpm to get boost is. You need to find the sweet spot.

Before you buy the TC, take your truck for a run and see at what rpm you start to create boost. That would be a sensible way of going about it. Easy enough to do.

Definitely lots to read about.

So your going to swap TC's just to have 200rpm more stall speed? Why wouldn't you just use the new turbo on the stock TC first for results and decide from there?

Points taken. I am only looking at this point. The transmission is getting a rebuild with some good parts. I was trying not to use th old converter in case it is contaminated plus why not an upgrade to match the turbo?. I was reading of the 20G sweet spot and I figured a stall a couple of rpm s lower of that sweet spot could do the trick. I must read on. I do want the torque. Hp will take care of itself at higher rpm s. The transmission guy is quite busy still. I should be next in line by Monday. Don't want to stall while the turbo makes boost and waste it. Rpm s climb pretty fast so 200-300 rpm below the boost window shouldn't mAke much difference. Isn't the stock turbo at full boost by 3200 rpm s-3500 maybe??

Waste gate bolt holes don't align on new housing. So much for stock bolt on replacement. I'll take pics when I get it back from the shop.:rant:

As for the converter stall, it will stay at around 2200 since cam is stock. Decided that although turbo can breathe at higher rpm, cam can't. :roll:

A 20G turbo needs a 20G wastegate actuator. They have different bolt patterns.

Or, have your stock compressor housing machined to accept the 20G wheel.
