How did they overcome the pulley spacing issue?

I think the snout on the damper can be machined down to give the correct clearance.

I used a combination of machining the crank trigger and the snout.....again not a bolt-in replacement.

I have those parts from Nolans pic he machined the balancer and the wheel to be the same as stock. Not exactly a bolt on

Good luck guys!

I can't remember if it was talk about but there is a company that makes a Distributerless Ignition for the V-6. the company is called.

The kit that Hot Rod used on the blown 4.3 was from this company. They have come a long way since the 4.3 engine that Hot Rod built. They have parts as well if you are looking for a do it yourself type.

Re: Distributerless Ignition possiblity.. (working on it)

The V8 vortec setup uses a different balancer. It just has a shorter hub sleeve. The v8 guys are just getting their balancer shortened to do the swap to the newer vortec trigger wheel. This is for a cheap crank trigger & or an obdii 0411 ecm swap. I teamed up with a vette owner to do a northstar v8 dis for a little while. The vette ended up not having room for an external sensor. You might have a look at the end of the sensor. The actual sensor element width is only about 1/4" So the wheel (shouldn't) need to be bigger than that.
We did get a wheel cut for the vette. We thinned it down in the center to reduce the amount it spaced the pulley out. I haven't looked at a serp pulley setup to see if all the brackets can be spaced out the same amt as the trigger mount thickness. As long as the spacers are the same size as the pad on the bracket there shouldn't be any strength issues. The water pump snout then becomes the limiting factor on how far you can move things out. Unless you make spacers for the pump too. Which is how I'd planned on doing my sbc v belt setup. You can also get a front mount hub for inside the pulley if you have the room. I have a link on another pc if that will work. Found it surfing the Megasquirt site.

The sensors on the Electromotive page are used in industrial automation equipment. All sorts of speeds/ranges voltage in out etc. Some are expensive, some aren't. Meaning $30 to $100 ea.
The problem I always had with them was they have 26ga wire in them. So very easy to break the cable.
I can't remember the brand or supplier though. I only worked there for a year....

Has anyone used this system or came up with another DIY solution yet? I would love to do this to my sy! This is my 6th 4.3 powered vehicle and they go through ignition parts like crazy.

Has there been any conclusion to this DIS system? The thread was very interesting but just kind of stopped.

Any news on this project? Any small update that would give us a glimmer of hope that maybe just maybe this could happen would be great.

I'm actually planning on resurrecting this later this fall, now that #689 is a bit more stable.
Got some other local guinea pigs for it, too...

i'm still on board for producing the kits. I just need you the smarter geeks to figure out all the electrical/tuning crap.

Awesome! I tried to pm you but your inbox is full. I wouldn't mind being a guinea pig and or investing a little $ towards cause. I have an idea or two I'd like to run by you. PM me your email add or make a little room for me in your inbox. Thanks Dig!

Thanks sneaky Renz.

We'll still need ya for that, too, once we work out what the brackets and stuff need to look like.
We'll also need to figure out some kind of adapter from the existing dissy connector to the one on the DIS module.

Would a cam trigger setup make this any easier ? I have this Mallory cam trigger for my oddfire and dont see why an evenfire version couldnt be made . I can take some more pics/measurements if its worth looking into . LMK

The trigger bracket out of that would make a good template. Would be interesting to see how that mounts to the block.

The plan is to put the wheel on the back of the balancer, though, so as to not run into pulley alignment issues. You could make this sort of setup work, but you'd need lots more magnets and in different places.

The wheel necessary for the GM coils is a different beast.

Edit: My bad... I didn't read *Cam* trigger. Won't work with the system we have in mind.

mallory makes an evenfire version too. Part # 648 is the kit. At >$500, it doesn't really fit the thinking of whats being attempted to construct.

For personal tastes, i prefer a crank trigger since it can be mounted lower and more out of site than a cam trigger.

Yeah... $500 is waaay too much for just part of the setup that would be needed.

The trigger that's needed doesn't have to be that elaborate, and can be done from ordinary mild steel.

Re: Distributerless Ignition possiblity.. (working on it)

No biggie . I havent looked into their availability and wanted to see if reverse engineering it would give you something easy to replicate . It was in the box of spare shit i picked up and figured id ask if it was worth mentioning . Renz is offering to make the needed parts for this project so why would anything need to be bought ?

I can understand the wanting it low and out of the way for looks , but whats the difference between a cam trigger saying what cylinder is firing and a crank trigger giving the same info ?

3 bolts mount it to the jesel belt drive . It would be easy to make something similar IMO

Cam spins half the speed of the crank and would require a slightly more complicated tone wheel. It could be done but once again would require buying a pricey cam drive setup and way more fab work.
