Re: Extreme Xtreme

OK time for an update:

*Frame painted, suspension back in, rear axle back in.
*Powerwashed the Ty engine, did some minor detailing to the engine and put it on the 4X4 frame using solid motor mounts.(Moroso/RPM)
*Changed the spark plugs while the engine was out. ;)
* Placed extended cab on frame.
* Engine controller will be mounted in cab similar to stock Ty location.
* Ty bucket seats installed. -not sure if I want to put in a console?
* Brake lines almost done (2WD and 4X4 use different size lines!)
* Have SS braided lines in the back, but need to purchase front SS braided.
* Still looking for front aluminum caliper upgrade that's in the dwindling budget.
* Remote oil filter is the next hurdle -may have to change the lines to all flexible.
* Stock intercooler has to be mounted, and have a new pump to integrate.
* Fuel pump upgrade on hold.
* New rear sway bar has to be mounted

Right now the fenderwell gap is rude, -like 4"!! Perhaps the torsion bars keys are wrong? but I cannot live with that kind of gap!! It's simply gay.

Contemplating buying the 2002 Helms service manual for the wiring to integrate the Ty bulk head wires to the newer wiring. Hopefully I can splice everything to the fuse box in the engine compartment.

I'm trying to go balls to the wall to finish before winter. Easier said than done...

Re: Extreme Xtreme

You guys are wrong.. The ZR2 frame is different. Its got a fat section welded behind the upper and lower control arm mounts the push the arms out the extra difference. I've always wondered what the difference was and I was never able to find a definitive answer online. Just so happened that I pulled into a parking lot about a month ago and there was a ZR2 and regular 4x4 parked right next to each other. Since I'm not too proud to go crawling under other people's cars I did just that.

That being said, I love the wider stance of the ZR2 trucks and there is no reason that they can be lowered just as much as a sy/ty. These pads behind the LCA mounting points only moved them out, not down so it would not change anything as far as lowering is conernet.

The CAs themselves are identical.

Re: Extreme Xtreme

IMO, I would've kept all the wiring from the new style 4.3 and body, and grafted that to the new motor. Then used HPTuners, or EFILive to adapt and tune to the new style ECM (as well as eliminate the MAF). This would've also put you in a great position to use an electronically controlled trans in the future (4L60E or 4L80E). Little more money to go this way, but would've made it almost a plug and play transaction.

Still a cool project though. Ever since I had my '04 Crew Cab truck I've wanted to make a "Sy Jr" out of one. Same Turbo/AWD goodness but with 4drs and a bit more style!

I still have the new style engine and wiring. Just seemed simpler to merge the SY bulk head wires into the Xtreme fusebox (Which is conveniently located in the engine compartment.)

For now I want to get this up and running. Mods will come later.

Re: Extreme Xtreme

Spring is on the way + laid off = time to get this truck running !

Engine is in. Cab is on, bed is on. The truck sits up high even though I took out a leaf or two in the rear and have the torsion bars on the loosest setting. :( *%$#!

Walbro (racetronix) debacle resolved and installed in tank.

The stainless braided front brakes were a PITA because the 4x4 and 2WD brake lines are two different sizes. Had to buy adapters to make it all fit. (should be resolved)

The Hellwig rear stabilizer bar went in OK -although not impressed with the overall set up.

Drilled and tapped the remote oil cooler for brass fittings. -May still remove the remote set up -makes for a cleaner engine compartment.

What's next:

Mount front stabilizer bar with new bushings.
Bleed brakes.
Change oil.
Mount the battery in the back bed.
Figure out how to mount the ATV radiator for the LCAC and run new hose.
Review bulk head wiring (there are a lot of left over wires from the '02 truck)
Re-install electric fan set up.
Remove A/C compressor (delete kit)

Re: Extreme Xtreme

The chick is my sister. I had to wonder myself who it was as the pics are from last summer. She is older (than you) and married.

Eric I may need your datamaster expertise when (if) I get this truck running.

Re: Extreme Xtreme

Awesome project! I was thinking of doing something similar with a blazer extreme body to replace my rused ty body... I have an aweosme ty with tons of great parts but the body is beyond hope IMO. This would be a great route for me to look in to

Re: Extreme Xtreme

It's that time of year again to report in. (Don't give up on me yet)

Today has been monumental in the sense I got the truck started. After weeks of studying the diagrams and figuring out whats what in wiring it started.

No leaks, weird noises-although the water pump may be on the way out. The idle was "hunting" so I have to look into that and then try to land the remainder of the wires for the ALDL, VSS, and DRAC.

This really inspired me to keep forging ahead to get the truck back on the road.

Here is a pic of the air to water set up:

Re: Extreme Xtreme

Update:

Although the truck started and I drove it on the street, the trans would not shift out of first. Something is sticking internally after sitting for so long. :(

That being said, it was decided to go with the original 411 PCM and put a 4l60E in it. So it's back to disassembly. Take out the drivetrain and engine harness.

The trans guy turned out to be flakey and for a few days thought i was getting stiffed, but eventually he sent the trans (although damaged-fedex sucks), so it will be a mystery if it works properly. (I'll post up a warning later about this guy  )

The harness is in with all the sensors converted or added. Made a custom FI harness (hope it works) :squint:

Waiting on a trans pan to button up the drive train and then get the PCM back. Charge the battery and then see if there is ignition.

Stay tuned. I miss my f'in truck and I'm going to get this SOB back on the road if it kills me.

Re: Extreme Xtreme

can't wait till this thing runs/drives and i can see it

I was thinking if we help out Mark with his truck you could see it then. Why trailer his truck back to your place when mine is right here??

I guess it will come down to timing/availability?
