Ed, see if they'll let you look at the chain before it goes in to compare it to your old one. Sys and Tys had a slightly wider chain than a regular S-10 4X4. Dammit. I was wanting to see how it was gonna go this weekend.

Edit:
Just checked the web site that Sean Morris passed along a couple years ago. They only list one width now but describe a different chain. May still help identifying it.

272888T 1 Drive Chain Syclone/Typhoon/Bravada/ S10 1.75" Wide - 43 Links 1990-97
$149.94
*Random pitch, one blue linkback, combination round and square linkbacks

272888V 1 Drive Chain - Astro/Safari 1.75" Wide - 43 Links 1990-98
$141.81
Straight pitch, two blue linkbacks, all rounded linkbacks

If i break the chain or rather the new one, I would think i could probably kiss the differentials good by as well as this new tranny!

Ya know for the life of me i still cant figure out why the major players in the aftermarket dont do anywhere near the build we have done in my tranny. Unless its just that they feel the cost outweighs what the marketing dept feels they can get for a realistic retail price point.

With that in mind i wonder what the next step or trans type would be if i find out with this setup that it is not strong enough for the motor.

4L80? dont know jack S about this?
350 turbo? dont know if you can keep od?
400 turbo and loose OD?

Almost seems a shame i cant just put a good old torqueflite 727 with a full manual valve body behind this and be done with it :) (Hey its what i grew up with :) )

Anyway, hopefully it never comes to figuring out what to use next.

cmon monday!

People are convinced that the inside of the transmission is voodoo magic and you must pay huge dollars to fix it and buy parts. Prey on the ignorance of others, make a buck on it.

Mike Hood is running a 2 wheel drive setup. You can ask him if it comes to it. Is that MrSyclone gentleman running 4 wheel drive still? Running in the 10s with AWD intact is awsome!

AFAIK there are three Syclones run under 10.50 this year with AWD. Robert's Sy is AWD, but he is using a beefed up 4L60E. As far as TH350 conversion. A few people run it, Mike Lee is selling them. It said to be better for truck mainly with strip duties. For a street car, I don't know, you will miss OD in no time for sure...

I only know one truck with a 4L80, it's Ryan's Ty in Chitown... Don't know anybody running a 400...

If you do a swap its a lot of work period, as far as I know it doesn't matter which way you went you'd still need to the following:

1) New Driveshafts front and rear.
2) Adapter to fit the stock transfer case to the new trans.
3) New or modified transmission crossmember.
4) New torque convertor. (Good luck getting this right the first time)

And if you go this far you might as well go electric right? Well maybe not but if you do you have to pay for the controller as well and learn how to work it. The 4l80e really is meant for a motor that is going to spun say 6000RPM plus and make some serious HP and TQ say 700HP and 900TQS.
The 400 route is definitely interesting because their is a gear vendors overdrive set up, so you could have 4 gears in a very strong trans that is very cheap to have rebuilt and their is a ton of tech out there on the 400. Good luck either way.

Did anyone watch this weeks Truck's on TNN?

They are doing this buildup and had the 502zz they are puting in some truck. Anyway they wanted overdrive but need something to hang with the torque so they decided to go with a 400 and use one of the bolt on OD's.

Like one of these, I think this was what they used....... http://www.tpiperformance.com/noname.html

Have any of you non-budget challenged guys ever thought about one of these units. They seem pretty awesome to me, think about it, start in first, shidt to overdrive/1st, then to 2nd, then overdrive/2nd, then to 3rd/then overdrive 3rd. It essentially makes a Turbo 400(which you can build stout as hell for cheap) into a auto six speed.

Anyways just a thought :D

I have looked into the gearvenders for another vehicle of mine and I found a few things. The overdrive is very strong like 1200tq but they take nearly a second to shift after pushing the button. IF you are going to use it like a 6 speed you have to manually put it into overdrive in first gear, remove the overdrive, waiting the second for it to come out, shift into second and so on. Personally I think it would be tough to time the shifting and acuating the overdrive. Dont get me wrong it would be great to use as an overdrive and I would use just as that.

Heres an update for you.

Something happened after the initial road test on the new tranny. Throttle valve got stuck. They pulled the pan and found metal in it.

After this they removed the tranny, tore it completely down only to find absolutley nothing damaged. Nothing worn, scared, chewed or anything.

The lines had been flushed. So this left only one more source for the metal.

I had them install a brand spankin new B&M 2800 stall tc.

So they sent the new tc out, had it cut open, it was full of schrapnel (their words). So they cleaned it out, new torrington, rewelded and ballanced.

The unit is being reinstalled and i hope to get it tomorrow.

So my earlier post that the tranny shop screwed up was incorrect.

More to come after they are done.

Btw cost for rebuild was 600 which included a new chain in the transfer case. Plus 75 for the tc redo. Why so cheap? Damn if i know. Makes no sense to me. But i paid them after the 1st road test and they told me there isnt anything additional in charges. I think this job cost them more than they collected.

ed

more after i get it back

damn Ed, hate to hear that, you think if you get ahold of B&M they might give you a little coin for sending you a bad TC? Good to hear you got such a "cost effective" build-up 8)

yeah imagine you buy 1400 in parts plus a tc and the shop tells you theres something wrong but they havent found the problem!

not a comfortable feeling to say the least.

cant beat the labor charge on this.

I cant wait to drive it.

ed

as for b&m, i wont do anything, the shop ate the extra labor and the 75 to fix the tc isnt worth the trouble, shit happens!

Didn't mean to step on any toes Blake, you know about 1342 times more about trannys than i do, for instance about 3/4's of your post is greek to me.. Was just commenting on how little he paid for a good tranny. I don't figure Ed to be one to buy crap parts for his Sy so I never meant to imply that. It's nice to hear about someone paying a good price for something rather than getting bent over all the time.

You don't need to apologize to anyone.
I read the sarcasm into it because of all the negative flack I've gotten already. That's me, not you. I was just hoping that sarcasm wasn't implied. That coupled with the other garbage makes me wonder why the fuck anyone would help anyone around here because of all the daggone risk. Especially when I didn't make a friggen penny. Usually stuff like this has the reward of a completed task with a positive outcome. This endeavor hasn't had any of that yet.

Thanks george
Just so you all know what george went thru on this.

From the pms and emails between me and george. I can tell you george
put his heart and soul into doing this for me.
The longer it took the shop to screw things up, the more upset george became. Thisis a guy that really cares when he sets out to help someone.

Its a shame he doesnt live local here, then again maybe not as he probly wouldve killed the people at that shop.

George went over and beyond heling me, and i thank him dearly for it.

Now as for the trans. I know the parts are good and hopefully the tranny shop got it correct in the end. God knows they got enough practice doing it since they had to do it twice.

I cant get over this thing with the tranny shop thinking the one box is a shift kit. Just makes no sense to me.
But since they may have screwed up and actually changed someting into the valve body and removed my B&M shift kit, I have another B&M shift kit to go back into the valve body.

I dont think george is carzy about me puttin the B&M stuff back into it. In fact i think he is against it.

But anyway. a very big thanks to george blake on this.
