my tranny shop just called

i forgot to to add one thing about all this.

I am driving it again. just taking it easy for the first 5 heat cycles.

So i cant really comment on performance aspects yet.

ed

fwiw if this goes south because the builder screwed up. I wont be back there. I would go to:

http://www.transmission-specialties.com/

i probably shouldve gone there this time but i thought theses guys that did my rebuild last time could handle this properly. Experience is a good teacher.

I hope i am not going to begin starting a nightmare here but...

It appears that after they had the TC repaired... well it wasnt actually repaired like it shouldve been.

I drove the truck briefly on a test drive before any problems occured.
The tc was smooth. so smooth i had to goose itonce to be sure it really was a different converter.

Anyway this thing actually feels like my old 911 did. shudders like ever.

Also the tc wont lock up using the manual switch i have.

Probably both related unless its something in the trans......

George? 22-30L for a huhges 2800 stall? is that the correct one?
hope so cuz it looks to cost a heck of a lot less than the B&M from summit.

Y'all are probably thinkng the same thing i am right now....

ed's gonna burn a lot a dinero in the next few weeks....i can see it comin... shit $%^&*(

ed

MIke if you read this c'mon over and drive this.

Are you fucking kidding me?
If your pan is full of metal and black shit, that tranny is gonna have to come out again. That's why I told you to have them put a filter on it. Just in case this happened again....Just like it just did. This would've prevented another teardown and protected all the shit I sent you. I'm having a hard time believing this.
They are gonna have to pull EVERY valve out of it including the pump. They are gonna have to clean out the case as well. Metal will get caught up in the case. I can't believe I'm seeing this.
Seems odd the the TC keeps failing. Did they say if they did anything to the pump?
Even if it is just metal jamming stuff up, it's all gonna have to be cleaned out.
B&M isn't gonna help you because of the shop having someone else work on it.
The 22-30L is the right one for our app. Make SURE they don't send you the "EL". I can't believe this.

Morgan can be a dick sometimes but he is absolutely right. They can only tear it out so many times before they start breaking fasteners and shit. We waisted a LOT of good parts on these people. Is there anyone else in your area? How about grabbing some hobo off the street? He couldn't do any worse.

the only guy in NJ I would recommend is my builder. but of course that would be up to Ed.

yep sounds like it morgan.

I dont feel the tc lockup like i would if i had the switch on from a standstill.

dm shows lockup at cruise on its own. this may just be an electrical signal telling it to lu even thoguhit doesnt.

THis is the way these idiots gave it back to me!
Kind of amazing they must think im a fuckin moron.

I dont think this is anything failing as im using it. I think the place they sent it to didnt do the repair inside the tc correctly in the 1st place. WHat i really mean is they TCC doesnt even engage.

I go and set the switch to see if it worked and i didnt see the normal feel of it when its locked. It just never locked!

Not going to jump to any conclusions here.

I'll get the pan off, if theres metal in it. I will tell them to just put the pan back on, and i will come and get it. Then go elsewhere.

If the pan is clean, Im gonna put the B&M stuff in and swap a different tc into it.

So the next question is what the heck to use for a tc.

Blake what do you think the stuff from PI?
And if something got screwed in the tranny, life anit over, anything can be fixed.

Ya know i have never had great luck with transmissions since i was 16!
So im not going to let this get to me.
Simply put, get anonther tc, and if anything has to be replaced so be it.

btw morgan. I would have bought your tranny. But for 1900 I can rebuy everything george got me and another tc.
But i wont need everything. I may not need any of it! hopefully just a tc.

ed

I will probably pull the pan off myself tomorrow just to see. THen i will decide from there.

If everything is shifting perfect but just no lockup....
Get underneath it and look on the driver's side of the tranny.
There is an electrical connector(square) that is white in color. Make certain it is plugged in good.
Pull on each wire a little bit and see if any of them come out.
It's hard for me to tell what your experiencing.
If it is chattering, it is trying to lock up.
If it is not chattering at all. Just nothing, then it isn't even trying to lock up.
You've kinda described both.

Oh. Yes they are retards and they should've paid you to learn how to work on a trans using your vehicle.
I was just kidding, Morgan. You've figured me out by now.
I'm gonna go off and break some shit now.

I am so tired of so called transmission specialists.

The dealer repeatedly abused my truck and each time I went to pick it up it didn't shift 1-2 at WOT just hit the fuel cut. I think the 5th time I went I could tell noticable wear on the rear tires where they had been driving it without the propshaft. And it the fuel gauge was on E

Soo..I said fuck it I am taking my truck home cause the 'tards are only hurting the truck. So now out comes the supposed rebuilt tranny and in goes the tranny out of my Ty.
After the Nats I'll be tearing into this thing to see how bad they fucked it up.
I guess at some point in the future I'll be educating myself on how these things work since the "parts changers" can't get it right. I am convinced that most dealers and tranny shops are just "parts changers" Don't have a clue on how to diagnose problems and improve the durability of the 700R4.
Ya know what else? Many of these "Parts Changers" can't even put the bolts back in right. Imagine the look on their face when I brought the truck back with the tech manuals pointing out which bolts were loose and missing. Assholes.

So like many things in life I've found that if you want it done right you educate yourself and then do it yourself.

At least if it fucks up I DID IT.

>rant mode off< 8)

I think we should start a drivetrain section specifically discussing TC's,Transmissions, and T-cases. Keith can you do that for us? One place to discuss the ins and outs of converters and syty tranny differences. Seems like a lot of the old posts are spread out and hard to find.

I asked Keith for that. Got shot down. Reasoning was they could have a specialty section on everything.
Would be nice to have a section only on engine. Another on trans, transfer case, and drivetrain. Another on Turbo, wastegate, and exhaust. You know. Kinda like helms put it. These could all be subsections of technical discussion. Oh well.

Ed. There are two switches on the valvebody. One tells the ecm when the truck is in 3rd(pressure in the right passage). Another is 4th discrete (pressure in that passage). If they left the connectors off or mixed them up, it would cause problems with TC lockup as well.

I have a feeling there is a mechanical problem though. Something about 2 fails in a row. I'm beginning to wonder if the guy put any fluid in the converter before he installed it initially.

sometimes you gotta just step back, take a deep breath and say "what the hell..." from all I've read about your installation problem what makes anyone think these guys at the shop you've been using could do it right if they try again??? my suggestion is to take it out and have it completely checked to see what it wrong with it before reassembling it again. maybe even ship the parts back to george to see if it can be detirmined if there is anything screwed up, and then have somebody else reassemble it for you...someone that can read.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem. I know george has put a lot into this, and aside from being expensive I know this is really dissapointing. still, think you may be better to cut your losses with this shop and find someone else to assemble your tran before they break it for you and you have to start over completely.

good luck

See? Morgan's an equal opportunity a-hole
If it were mine, I'd take it somewhere else and handle it legally later.
If I were you, I wouldn't detail a damn thing for the owner.
Makes me wonder why the owner didn't do it anyway.
Make sure they give you ALL your old parts as well.

race or get outta the way
well i just got off the phone with summit.

I will do a return of the B&M unit.
Hopefully since it was ordered on 6-23 and failed on startup even though b&m doesnt warranty racing converters i may have a chance.

If not i will contest it with my credit card company. I have neer done anyting like that but i know its possible.

While on the phone i ordered the same tc as george. hughes 22-30L

Not going to take a chance on B&M only becuase if the other units on the shelf were built in the same lot number or by the same guy. I cant afford to take the chance.

So it looks like

ed VZ the torq converter

good performance tc''s =zero

bad tc's = 2

Sooner or later i will get a good one.

So i had mike pearce come over adn drive it. He said the shuder was not as bad as the 911 was but its there. It wasnt the 1st time i drove it.

ON a side note his 2800 stall doesnt lug the motor with the tcc locked like my 2400 did. dont know what this means yet.

I'm not pulling the pan on this today......Like somebody said above....I'm takin a break from this shit.

hi ed

from what i read part of the big problem is the converter loaded the tranny up with metal parts, and it did this the first time you fired tjis puppy up. B&m or summit may have no or a limited warranty on this thing, but don't they have some responsibility for the converter to at least working in the first place? If I were you I think I would talk to someone about their converter screwing up your transmission. they may not want to do anything, and may tell you they aren't responsible, but if you are persistent I think you can get them to pay for some of the tran parts their converter screwed up. it has to work at least for the purpose they sell it for. we're not talking here that it doesn't make the vehicle go faster or whatever, we're talkin about it not even working for the purpose it was intended for becdaquse it was defective and consequently having it screw up the rest of the tranny.

your state has a consumer protection department through the attorney general that should be able to advise you on this. remember, although this is a lot of money to you, to b&m or summit this is nothin and if you take them to small claims court they have to address it or you will get a judgement against them and they don't want that. in the long run it will possibly be easier to cooperate with you than fight if you are reasonable in your request. stay on good terms with the traqn shop that did the work so you have a witness if needed

Absolutely.

The key words here are Fitness or Merchantability

And any product should meet that criteria.

I understand what ths is, lawyers understand it, and so do most companies as well as the credit card companies base their chargebacks to a large extent on this criteria.

This product i am sure , without being a lawyer fails any test of fitness or merchantability.

No i am not a lawyer....sounds like one though doesnt it.

I write a great legalese letter when i have to! :D

100in6

100in6
you're on track now. fitness of merchantablity is the key words. I sent george an email saying if you two guys need a place to meet halfway between you to get the tran back to him you can meet at my house outside of pittsburgh. i think i would either get george to put it together after he checks it throughout or maybe at least have him get it assembled by someone he knows that will do it the way he says. naturally, that is all depending on him and if he has the time, but I think you got shortchanged by the shop that did it and it sure isn't gonna tell if the design holds up to abuse. just let me know if you're interested. unfortunately, the tran is gonna take some more time to get runnin

hang in there

Ya know at this point i would probably buy george a plane ticket, and fly him here.

Safer than takin a chance on an 8 hour ride to pgh.

But i think george is more stressed out than me on this, so i'm NOt gonna pursue that one.

Ive come so far with this truck, and here on the last major thing to have to go thru this.

Edited to add the word NOT to:
