Think my turbo is letting go

I went out this afternoon and took the TY. Once the truck warmed up I got on it to about 15psi and I heard an all too familiar screeching sound. Sounded like the compressor wheel hitting the housing or exhaust wheel. As the day progressed, I noticed that I couldn't really hear the turbo whistle any where near as loud as it did. So me being the calm cool don't abuse anything kind of guy, I get on it WOT. Well, truck still puts down 22psi and fast but I do feel a hesitation at around 15-18psi. No odd changes on the WB, alky is good. Not sure what the deal is here, I am hoping it is my imagination because I hear turbo rebuilds can suck. Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to take it off and inspect it.

Are you running a ball bearing center case these are
very pricey to rebuild i am awaiting my new turbo from
Comp turbo they have triple ball bearings :tup:

Re: Think my turbo is letting go

Well I took the down pipe off and the cobra elbow. Turbo seems ok. What really blows is one of the down pipe bolts broke off while I was taking them out. And wouldn't ya know I broke the ****ing easy out in there trying to fish it out. Not the exhaust housing has to come off and I need to run it to the machine shop to fix it. This sucks. So I am still left with the question, where did my turbo whistle go? May be it's not that important but it was there before and its so quiet now it makes me think something is wrong..

Holy cow Mike. If you did not have bad luck...

Your dedication to your trucks is second to none!!

Your screen name is most appropriate. I don't think there is anyone on this board that has more dedication to their truck(s) than you. Most would have bailed long ago and moved onto something else.

I hope this latest issue is minor and a quick and easy fix.

This is the first time I ever actually figured out Mike's screen name lol I never really thought about it before. TY TIL I DIE. Nice!

My 60-1 turbo got quieter too after a few thousand miles and so did the wastegate flapper. Never really figured out why but I've yet to see an issue with it. As much trouble as I've had with my truck over the years I think you've got me beat. I didn't think that was possible.

S-O-B!!!!

Looks like I need turbo work. My exhaust wheel is trashed all the way around! I took the whole turbo off to get the bolt hole fixed tomorrow and it looks like I'll be sending it off to PTE instead.

Broken easy out

I have a good feeling this all is related to my oil issues. Perhaps a broken ring land? Maybe a small piece of piston has made its way in to my exhaust housing? Looks like I may just go ahead and pull the motor and pop it open and see what's going on in there.

Damm!
Something took out that turbine wheel.

I see the opened up wastegate hole. Nice! How big is the wastegate hole now? 1", 1.250"?

looks like you been overboosting or running very lean i don,t
think you will be able to see the broken piston ring lands from the top
better just strip the engine and replace with forged pistons

It has forged pistons, everything is in my sig.

Re: Think my turbo is letting go

You have some bad luck there. Sorry to see that but if anyone is going to get it up and running fast, it's you!

Curious to see what you find in the engine - does sound like some bits flew off of something. Hope it's not too bad.

JE forged piston you said i changed two set of those
already but with nitrous use

You can just do a compression leak down test before removing the
heads that will save you some work

I'm not going to **** around with this testing and what not. Why waste the time doing a leak down when I can just pull it and tear it down in almost the same amount of time? I agree with Lowestform, something definitely went through it and I say why waste my time testing for something that I know happened? May as well tear the bastard down and check it all out.

Re: Think my turbo is letting go

You do have bad luck, there has got to be a breaking point before death. Dont give up!

Anyways..... That pic is clearly signs of deteriation from high heat, running lean, misfire's or just plane detonation. Notice how the wear pattern is closer to the bearing journals (center section) Im betting on further inspection of your journal bearings the the exhuast side will show premature wear.

Believe it or not Mike, I know you have already brought this to the table with all your oil leaks from high crankcase presssure and asked about a vacuum pump. I think your failure resulted from two causes, High crankcase pressure and lean air to fuel ratio or misfire's. When you have high crankcase pressure you can actually cause a oil supply problem for the journals. Resulting in high heat buildup on the shaft and can increase the heat to the turbine. The high crankcase pressure keeps the return oil to the pan restricted and not flowing efficiantly. Ive seen this on diesels with serious blowby problems and have run untill the turbo fails.

Before you pull the engine expecting damage, i'd replace your turbo and fix or adjust your AFR's safe and do somthing about the crankcase pressure.

If a physical piece of an engine component came off and destroyed the wheel, shouldn't that be replaced?

Re: Think my turbo is letting go

I didnt know you already had evidence of that? My experiance is leaning more towards heat deteriation. You can pull the engine fast so why waste your time with a leaktester or compression test to confirm anything.

Not sure I would call it evidence, I don't have a chunk of metal in hand or anything like that. Basically, the way the wheel has pieces ripped out of it and the fact that it happened instantly made me think it was an actual piece of metal that went through it.
