Battery exploded ? !

My 93 Ty is in storage in my attached garage. It has a battery tender permantly wired to batery. (installed by previous owner) I leave the hood open so I can easily plug in and unplug the tender.
last nite after work I went into garage to get some tools (walked in front of Ty) and didn't notice anything. When I was about to go back into the house, I looked down, and saw this laying on the floor

What the heck........The tender must have malfunctioned and blew up the battery.

I got the battery out, what a pain! Ever try to get a battery with the top and one side blown off out of a Typhoon?

I don't know when it happened. I haven't been down there for over week. I washed everything down with a baking soda solution and am hoping that the paint hasn't been damaged. I couldn't see any spottong on the fenders, maybe some on the front bumper. The lighting in there is quite poor, will have to roll it outside to get a good look at it.
Anyone have anything like this happen? Any guesses on if the acid will have messed up the paint?

That really sucks!!! Get the acid washed off really good, and work some cleaner wax into the areas that got sprayed... The tender probably shorted out and made boom happen...

I have that same tender on my El Camino and the Auto Shut off would never shut off... I burned up a few batteries by overheating them with that same exact tender!

Well, if Tim "the tool man" Taylor installed the battery tender, then it was bound to explode at some point. :rotf:

Had a battery puke some acid on mine.... Get it rinsed and hit it with baking soda.

Take the battery tray out, make sure you get it all out. It'll rust/corrode everything.

It's fortunate that nobody was nearby when it blew...

When I store my Sy I just disconnect the battery and leave it in the truck. In six years I have never had to jump start it in the spring. I just hook it back up, turn the key and away I go!

Before that I had a Optima Red Top. I left that disconnected one winter and the thing was dead as a doornail in the spring and would not take a charge at all. In my opinion those batteries are junk.

I think I'll stay away from the battery tenders and just buy a battery a little more often.

x2. I know lots of people and millions of dollars worth of cars that are on tenders, but tenders still make me nervous for some reason.

I have the exact one pictured above that came with my Syclone. It's been on the workbench forever...no I think I'm gonna toss it for sure.

I had a battery explode back in '01 in my wife's '98 Camry. Just walked out of a store, jumped in, and BOOM. Top was still there, but blew out 2 sides of the battery. While I was there scratching my head trying to figure out what to do next, a bunch of cops came flying into the lot. Guess there was a call for shots fired in the lot. Put in an Energizer battery from Pep Boys, and 9 years, 130k miles later, it still tested good when I traded the car in in January.

possible that battery froze ??? looks like what happens to a battery when you try to charge it when its frozen.

Had that happen with a small front end loader at work. A guy found the battery dead in the morning, hooked up the charger for an hour at 50 or so amps and as soon as he clicked the key to start it up, the engine cover blew off the back. Those batteries are about 3 times the size of the ones we have too.

I have had the same battery in my Ty since March 2000. I'm not sure when the previous owner installed it, but its the same one in there to this day. I had to jump-start her one time since then, I left her connected for a few months.

I was going to post about this too. How long will a battery last like this? (So far 10+ years for me).
Or how long will it last when its connected to a tender? Anybody else have battery lifespans like this?

Re: Battery exploded ? !

Baking soda can newtralize the acid. I would powder all the areas were acid was unless you already cleaned it out.
