Mike if she just wants to watch a movie.. I'd say go watch the movie because a movie is no big deal. It's when they start bitching and moaning about all the time you waste with the truck and not them or how much money that truck is setting us back and how it's always breaking etc.

Good luck with the truck you'll find the issue and correct it. At least you know the payoff of having a built working ty is worth it in the end to you.

they break because most machine shops suck,or owners dont watch wbo2 and do it themselves,or in this case maybe part failure.

You lie man. The only cds you had around when I asked were from the Village People.

Re: Blew my new motor

I can assure I watch as many gauges as possible. I had the truck tuned for about 10 psi and I was running about 8. AFR's looked great, temps looked normal and oil pressure was good. I tore the block down and here is what I found.

I was afraid to run this crank as it was and I didn't listen to myself. Lesson learned I guess. So now I have a snapped crank and two wasted pistons. These pistons were custom and I am sure this is going to be expensive no matter what route I go. Everything else looks great. Whats is odd is that there really isn't a whole lot of waste in the motor. I guess since it broke and didn' keep turning that would explain that.

Re: Blew my new motor

That's pretty much smoking gun... it broke right where the diameter is reduced the most.

Soo... if that was a small journal crank, and you intend to go back to a normal one, doesn't that imply you need new rods too? In fact, not much of anything does you any good, unless you intend on getting a billet stroker to put back in.

Re: Blew my new motor

Wow, it all looks like it hasn't even been in the engine. Sorry to see that mate. Just a question but do you have 4 bolt mains? Looks like 2s. I've never seen them before so was curious. Any plans to if you don't already?

I suspect you had some eduction/insight on the downsides of an offset ground crank before you put it in, hence your gut feeling.

We have all been there, at least a dozen times. Hindsight 20/20

Re: Blew my new motor

Going to a smaller journel usuually does not make a crank weaker if machined correctly.

They are actually stronger because of the huge radius' cut into the sides of the journels.

SBC guys do it & run aftermarket Honda rods w/a small dia big end.

Did you need special bearing w/big chamfers cut into them?

Sorry about the engine,it stinks when that happens.

Re: Blew my new motor

Along with everyone else's comments I'm wondering if the crank was magnafluxed? Be interesting to actually see it to see if there is a "clean" portion in the break indicating a crack.

As mentioned prolly should have the block checked also.

Bum deal all around.

Re: Blew my new motor

OH I certainly don't plan on just sticking it back together with out really having it checked out. I am going to drop everything off at the shop tomorrow and I am going to tell them I want this stuff gone through as gone through can get. The break was very smooth. When I talked to the machine shop earlier they told me they will help out in anyway. I hope this isn't code for "hey, we think we might have ****ed up". I would rather this be a part failure or even my own screw up as I do NOT want to deal with fighting with a machine shop again, getting stiffed and having to go find yet another one. I definitely have some options here and a four bolt conversion may be in the mix, we'll see. Still not totally convinced on that one but may have come across a smoking deal on one.

This weekend I had planned on really getting this thing dialed in and was going to post up my special thanks to everyone who helped out. Sorry to those of you who did. Soon.

Re: Blew my new motor

The bearings actually didn't look too bad. Where the break was on #5&6, the edges were pretty shinny so I suspect an align bore WILL be needed. Rods look tittastic. Lost two pistons, that will be my biggest issue. These were custom pistons from JE and I am not sure yet if they will sell just two. If not and I have to get a whole set, I may have the block re-sleeved. I hear people say this costs about $600 and is not worth it. As long as there is no quality issue (and I don't yet know if there is or not ) I'd rather pay for a re-sleeve than spend 4 hours in a junkyard only to bring home a POS block that is just bad off as mine. If we end up staying at the .040 over and can get the pistons at a FAIR price, I will do a partial block fill I think.

Re: Blew my new motor

A little JB weld can do wonders, I have one that looks like that one too but was a factory crank and it lasted just about 20k miles on the rebuild. That crank is not even good for a core. I would call the crank manufacture and see if they can do anything for you since it was new. Maybe even send it to a metallurgist to see wtf went wrong. Was there a disclaimer for boosted applications or the usual no warranty on high performance parts. Looking forward to see you tearing up the streets soon.
